Stockholm to Hamburg
Snälltåget runs direct trains from Stockholm Central through Malmö and Copenhagen to Hamburg Hbf. Both a daytime and an overnight service run on selected dates.
The daytime service arrives in Hamburg in the evening. That makes it the right choice if you plan to sleep in Hamburg and continue the next morning. The overnight train reaches Hamburg in the early hours and gives you a realistic shot at Paris and Lyon the same day.
Do not count on SJ for this leg. SJ X2000 services between Stockholm and Copenhagen are suspended until autumn 2026. Check the Snälltåget timetable and book before locking in hotels or onward connections.
Sleeper and couchette places on the night train are limited. Book early if you want a proper bed.
Hamburg to Paris
From Hamburg Hbf, ICE high-speed trains run through Cologne (Köln Hbf) to Paris Gare du Nord. Hamburg to Cologne takes roughly 4 hours 30 minutes, and Cologne to Paris around 3 hours 20 minutes, so allow around 8 hours for the full Hamburg to Paris run before connection time. DB and SNCF jointly operate the cross-border services into Paris; book on bahn.de, SNCF Connect, or through Trainline or Omio.
Reservations are compulsory for Interrail and Eurail pass holders on these ICE trains. The pass covers the travel cost, but you still need to pay separately for a seat. Check the current fee when you book.
Cologne is a useful point if you need flexibility. Break the journey there, eat something, and catch a later train to Paris.
Paris: the station change
This is the single most important detail for this journey. ICE trains from Hamburg via Cologne arrive at Paris Gare du Nord. TGV trains to Lyon depart from Paris Gare de Lyon. These are different stations.
Two stations. Different parts of the city. Book Gare de Lyon for Lyon trains, not Gare du Nord. If a booking page shows only “Paris”, open the train details and confirm the station before you pay.
The simplest transfer is the RER D, a direct two-stop hop that takes around 25 to 30 minutes door to door, or roughly 30 to 45 minutes by Metro. A taxi takes around 20 minutes at quiet times, more with heavy luggage or at peak hours. Allow at least 90 minutes between your arriving ICE and your departing TGV. Two hours is safer.
If that transfer feels risky for your schedule, look for a direct Brussels-Lyon TGV instead. Not every date has one, but when the timetable works, Brussels-Lyon avoids the station change entirely and takes around 3 hours 45 minutes to 4 hours.
Paris to Lyon
Direct TGV INOUI services from Paris Gare de Lyon to Lyon Part-Dieu run roughly every 30 to 60 minutes through the day. The fastest services take around 2 hours.
Lyon Part-Dieu is the main city-centre arrival station. Lyon Perrache is the other city station but receives fewer TGV services from Paris. For almost everyone arriving from the north, Part-Dieu is the station to book.
The domestic Paris-Lyon corridor is one of France’s busiest high-speed lines and runs consistently throughout the year. As with any leg, check the SNCF timetable for your exact departure before buying non-refundable tickets.
The Brussels route as an alternative
When a direct Brussels-Lyon TGV fits your schedule, it simplifies the French section considerably.
From Hamburg, reach Brussels-Midi/Brussel-Zuid via high-speed services through Cologne. Direct Brussels-Lyon TGV INOUI trains take roughly 3 hours 45 minutes to 4 hours. Check SNCF Connect or Trainline for departures on your date.
The trade-off is frequency. Brussels-Lyon direct trains are less frequent than Paris-Lyon departures, with only a handful of direct services a day. If your Hamburg connection arrives outside the available window, you end up going via Paris anyway.

A Global Pass covers all five countries on this route: Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Belgium (if you go via Brussels), and France. A one-country pass is not enough.
The pass does not remove fees. Every leg still needs a paid reservation:

Flying is faster. Stockholm Arlanda to Lyon Saint-Exupéry is roughly 3 hours in the air, plus airport time at both ends.
Choose the train if you want a flight-free route, city-centre stations at both ends, the option to use a rail pass across several countries, or the experience of travelling overland through Scandinavia, Germany, and France.
