Vicenza to Milan by train

Trenitalia and Italo both serve Vicenza, but they operate differently and price differently.

Trenitalia runs Frecciarossa high-speed trains and slower Regionale services. Frecciarossa is the fast option: modern, frequent, and accepted by Interrail and Eurail passes with a mandatory seat reservation. Trenitalia Intercity trains also run on the corridor, though less often.

Italo (NTV) is Italy’s private high-speed operator. Its trains stop at Verona Porta Nuova, Desenzano, and Brescia before reaching Milano Centrale. These are through services, so you do not change trains, but they are not non-stop. Italo fares can be very competitive, especially when booked in advance.

One important note: Italo does not accept Interrail or Eurail passes. If you hold a rail pass, you need to buy a full Italo ticket separately or choose a Trenitalia service. For pass holders, Trenitalia is the only covered option on this route.

Journey times and frequency

Frecciarossa trains cover the route in around 1 hour 41 minutes. Italo’s typical journey time is around 1 hour 40 minutes.

Across the day, roughly 13 direct high-speed services depart Vicenza for Milan, combining Frecciarossa and Italo departures. Italo runs around 7 of those. Including regional and Intercity trains, the total rises to about 35 daily services from Vicenza. The earliest service departs around 00:15 and the latest around 23:48, though high-speed departures are concentrated during the day.

Regional trains also serve the route, but they typically require a change at Verona Porta Nuova or Padova. Journey times stretch to 2.5 hours or more. They are cheaper but rarely worth the extra time on this corridor.

Seat classes

Trenitalia Frecciarossa

Frecciarossa offers four classes: Standard, Premium, Business, and Executive. Standard covers everything most travellers need on a sub-two-hour journey: comfortable seating, free Wi-Fi, and power sockets. Business and Executive add at-seat service and a quieter carriage. Pay the premium only if those matter to you.

Italo

Italo runs three classes: Smart, Prima, and Club Executive. Book Smart for this route. It comes with comfortable reclining leather seats, free Wi-Fi, and power outlets at every seat. Prima adds welcome service and extra legroom; Club Executive includes lounge access and dedicated catering. Neither is necessary for a 1h 40m journey unless comfort is a clear priority.

Rail passes on this route

Interrail and Eurail passes are valid on Trenitalia services, including Frecciarossa. Italo does not accept either pass.

If you hold a pass, you still need a seat reservation for Frecciarossa. The pass-holder reservation fee for Le Frecce (Trenitalia’s high-speed trains) is around €10 per journey. Book the reservation through Trenitalia’s website, at any Italian staffed ticket office, or via the Interrail or Eurail Rail Planner app.

Do not board a Frecciarossa with only your pass and no reservation. The pass covers the travel, but the reservation is what assigns your seat. Without it, you cannot board.

Regional Trenitalia trains need no reservation and are covered by Interrail and Eurail.

Buying tickets

For the best prices, book directly with the operator. Trenitalia sells tickets at trenitalia.com and via the Trenitalia app. No account is required, though having one makes it easier to manage changes. Tickets are sent by email and shown on your phone. Italo sells tickets at italotreno.com and via the Italo app, with no booking fee on the official site.

Both operators also sell at station ticket offices and vending machines in Vicenza and at Milano Centrale. Buying on the day is possible but generally more expensive, particularly on Frecciarossa.

Third-party platforms (Omio, Trainline, Rail Europe) are useful for comparing departures across both operators. Be aware that some add a booking fee.

Ticket flexibility

Trenitalia offers several fare types with different flexibility:

Trenitalia’s CartaFRECCIA loyalty programme rewards frequent travellers with points that can be redeemed for future journeys. Registration is free.

Two annual discount cards are available from Trenitalia. Carta Verde (around €40 per year) is for travellers aged 12 to 26 and offers 10% off base fares on high-speed trains. Carta Argento (around €30 per year, free for those over 75) is for travellers over 60 and covers discounts on Intercity and regional trains.

Families benefit from Trenitalia’s standard child pricing. Children under 4 travel free without a seat, or at 50% with one. Ages 4 to 12 pay 50% of the adult fare. Some Intercity promotions offer free travel for children under 15 with accompanying adults, but terms vary and change seasonally, so check before booking.

Stations

Vicenza has a single main station. Both Trenitalia and Italo trains depart from there.

Milano Centrale is a large early-20th-century terminal on two levels. Metro lines 2 and 3 serve the station directly, and the Duomo is around 15 minutes away by metro. Both Trenitalia and Italo trains arrive at Centrale, so there is no ambiguity about which Milan station to book. If you are connecting onward from Centrale, allow time to navigate the building. It is busy at peak times.

Luggage and pets

Most trains allow standard hand luggage at no extra charge. Italo Smart class applies size limits for overhead storage; bags that do not fit overhead can be stored in designated areas at the end of each coach. Check the size limit for your specific service at italotreno.com before travelling.

Small pets in carriers travel free on most services. Larger dogs require a paid ticket and must wear a muzzle on board. Folded or cased bicycles travel free. Standard uncased bicycles are not permitted on Frecciarossa or Italo.
