Only one train runs direct from Rome to Vienna: the ÖBB Nightjet, overnight from Roma Tiburtina to Wien Hauptbahnhof in about 15 hours.

Night train or daytime trains

The Nightjet leaves Roma Tiburtina in the early evening and calls at Firenze Campo di Marte and Bologna Centrale before it heads north through the night. In Austria it stops at Villach, Klagenfurt, Graz and Wien Meidling, then reaches Wien Hbf the next morning. For most travellers it is the easier choice. One night replaces a long day of changes.

By day there is no through train. The simplest option is a Trenitalia Frecciarossa from Roma Termini around midday to Venezia Mestre, where you change to an ÖBB Railjet. It runs via Udine and Villach and gets to Wien Hbf just after midnight, about 11.5 hours after leaving Rome. Earlier departures via Bologna and Innsbruck reach Vienna in the evening. Expect two or more changes and 12 to 13 hours.

Where to board in Rome

The Nightjet leaves from Roma Tiburtina, not Termini. Tiburtina is in the east of the city on Metro line B, which also serves Termini, where lines A and B meet. Leave time to cross town with luggage before an evening departure. The daytime Frecciarossa leaves from Roma Termini. If a booking page shows only "Rome", open the train details and confirm the station before you pay.

Running days

Up to 12 December 2026 the Nightjet runs every night. On 7, 14 and 15 November 2026 it leaves Rome an hour earlier than usual.

The 2027 timetable starts on 13 December 2026 and is still provisional. It keeps the same evening departure from Rome. It also shows no Nightjet from Rome on some dates between January and early April 2027 and from 2 to 17 November 2027, and none at all from 3 May to 4 September 2027.

Tickets and Interrail reservations

Every Nightjet ticket includes a reserved seat, couchette or bed, and couchette and sleeper tickets include breakfast. This route uses the new-generation Nightjet, with Mini Cabins for one person and a top sleeper category with its own bathroom. The cheapest Sparschiene fares are limited on each train, go on sale up to six months ahead and are often lower from Monday to Thursday. Book early if you want a particular cabin.

An Interrail pass covers the Nightjet, but each pass holder pays a compulsory reservation fee. The fee moves with demand, starting at €4.90 for a seat and €29.90 per person for a Mini Cabin or a place in a four-berth couchette. Pass places are limited. Reserve before you board, because buying on the train adds a service charge.

On the daytime route, the Frecciarossa to Venice needs a compulsory reservation. The Railjet from Italy carries a compulsory pass supplement with the seat reservation, €13 in second class. Bikes go on the Nightjet and the Railjet only with a reservation, and spaces are limited.
