The Munich to Prague train is a direct city-centre route from Munich Hbf to Praha hlavní nádraží. It usually takes about 5.5 to 5.75 hours, runs as the EuroCity Bavorský expres / Bavarian Express, and is useful if you want a simple cross-border trip without airports.

EC 353 follows the same pattern at 06:44 to 12:21. EC 359 departs Munich Hbf at 12:44 and arrives Praha hl.n. at 18:21. Later examples include EC 361 arriving around 20:21 and EC 363 arriving around 22:22.

Use those times as orientation, not as a promise for every travel date. Engineering work, public holidays, and operating notices can change departure minutes or arrival points. Always check your exact date before you book.

The service is direct, but it is not a high-speed train. It is a conventional cross-border EuroCity service that stops at several cities and regional hubs on the way.

Stations and route

The train normally leaves from Munich Hbf and arrives at Praha hl.n., the main station in Prague.

Munich Hbf is the main rail hub in Munich, with easy S-Bahn, U-Bahn, tram, and regional connections. Praha hl.n. is Prague's main station and sits close to the city centre. For most visitors, it is the right arrival point.

The route runs northeast from Munich through Bavaria, then crosses into Czechia near Furth im Wald. Stops along the way include Freising, Landshut, Regensburg, Schwandorf, Cham, Furth im Wald, Domazlice, Plzen, and Prague.

Some services continue beyond Praha hl.n. to Praha-Vysočany. For normal trip planning, search to Praha hl.n. unless you specifically need another Prague station.

Tickets and fares

Munich-Prague ticket prices vary by date, flexibility, sales channel, and how early you book.

For a useful official fare anchor, České dráhy (ČD) lists Prague-Munich fares from 368 CZK on its route page. alex also lists a Prag-Spezial-Ticket for Munich-Prague at 55 EUR one way and 96 EUR return from 14 December 2025.

Those are examples, not guaranteed prices for every train. Advance fares can sell out, flexible tickets cost more, and booking sites may add their own fees.

For most travellers, the practical booking order is:

• Check České dráhy (ČD) for the route and Czech-side fare options.

• Check Deutsche Bahn or alex-linked booking options for German-side fare products.

• Compare reputable rail retailers if you need an English booking flow, multi-country basket, or support in your home currency.

• Book earlier for summer weekends, holidays, and Friday/Sunday travel.

alex says tickets can also be bought from train staff on alex trains at no extra charge, with exceptions for some network tickets. Treat that as a fallback, not the best plan for an international trip. Booking before travel gives you clearer prices and fewer surprises.

Seat reservations, Eurail and Interrail

Seat reservations are possible on the Munich-Prague train and are worth considering in busy periods.

České dráhy (ČD) marks reservations as possible in indicated coaches. That means a normal ticket may get you onto the train, but a reservation gives you a specific seat. If you are travelling in summer, around holidays, on a Friday, or with a group, reserving seats is the calmer choice.

If you plan to use a Eurail or Interrail pass, check the selected train in your pass planner or booking channel before boarding. Confirm whether the train is covered on your travel date and whether a seat reservation is optional, recommended, or required.

Bike travel needs extra care. České dráhy (ČD) train details say bicycle spaces can require a compulsory reservation. If you are bringing a bike, do not leave that decision until you are standing on the platform.

What the train is like

The Munich-Prague train is practical rather than flashy.

Official train details list 1st and 2nd class seating, toilets, 230 V power sockets, wheelchair-capable accommodation, seat reservations in indicated coaches, and snack service on parts of the route. České dráhy (ČD) also lists Wi-Fi on the Czech section of many services.

Bring water and snacks if you are particular about food, because onboard catering on this route is useful but limited.

The scenery is a real advantage of taking the train. The route crosses Bavaria and western Bohemia, with a slower rural section around the German-Czech border before the run into Plzen and Prague.

Operators now and the Leo Express change

Current Munich-Prague services are operated by Die Laenderbahn/alex on the German side and České dráhy (ČD) on the Czech side. Die Laenderbahn has operated the alex service since 2007, and the Munich-Prague contract runs until 2028.

You may see the train described as alex, CD, EuroCity, Bavorský expres, or Bavarian Express depending on the booking site. For travellers, these names refer to the same direct corridor between Munich and Prague.

Leo Express has announced that it will launch service on the Prague-Pilsen-Regensburg-Munich line from 13 December 2026, with eight connections per day planned and international fares from EUR 9. That is a future change. Do not assume Leo Express is the operator for trips before that launch date unless your booking result explicitly shows it.

Train, bus, or flight

The train is the best fit if you want a comfortable city-centre journey and do not mind spending about half a day in transit.

Buses between Munich and Prague can be competitive on price and sometimes on journey time. They are worth checking if your budget is tight or the train fare is unusually high. The trade-off is comfort, luggage handling, and the reliability of road traffic.

Flying rarely makes sense for this route once you include airport transfers, security, boarding time, and the distance from each airport to the city centre. The train is slower than a plane in the air, but much simpler door to door.

Check the exact date before making plans around a specific departure.

Timetables on this route can shift by a few minutes, and some services have operating notices. If you are connecting onward in Prague, leave a buffer rather than booking a tight connection.

Compare fares before you commit. A flexible official ticket, a CD advance fare, an alex fare product, and a retailer ticket can all price differently for the same journey.

Use Praha hl.n. as your destination unless you know you need another Prague station. It keeps the search simple and lands you at the main station for the city centre.
