Frequently asked questions

Can I take a bicycle on DART or an InterCity train?

Book an InterCity bicycle space online before travel. Standard bicycles are allowed free on off-peak DART and Commuter trains when space permits, but not from 07:00 to 10:00 or 16:00 to 19:00 on weekdays. Folded, covered bicycles are allowed throughout the day.

How much notice is needed for assistance at Heuston or Connolly?

Request assistance at least one hour before travel at Heuston or Connolly. Irish Rail asks for 12 hours at other stations so staff can be deployed. Contact the operator earlier when possible, and confirm the notice period for every station on the journey.

Do children under five need an Irish Rail ticket?

Children under five travel free with a fare-paying adult, but free travel does not guarantee a separate seat. For a child's seat on a reservable train, choose Free Travel Pass or Valid Ticket in the journey planner and check availability.

Does an Irish Ferries SailRail ticket include the London Underground?

No. An Irish Ferries SailRail ticket covers mainline rail travel, not local buses, the Tube or another underground system in Britain. Add the local fare and transfer time separately when planning travel between Dublin and a London station.

Where should I put luggage on an Irish train?

Put cabin-sized bags in the overhead racks and larger cases in the luggage racks at the ends of the carriage. Keep bags with you and leave aisles, doors and platforms clear. Irish Rail does not provide a luggage-handling service.
