Kalambaka has no trains at the moment. Hellenic Train buses link the town with Palaiofarsalos, where the InterCity trains from Athens and Thessaloniki stop.
How to reach Kalambaka by train
Hellenic Train replaces the rail link between Palaiofarsalos and Kalambaka with buses. Two buses run in each direction every day, weekends included, and the ride takes 2 hours via Sofades, Karditsa and Trikala. Every journey from Athens or Thessaloniki is an InterCity train to Palaiofarsalos followed by the bus. Times below are valid in autumn 2026.
From Athens
InterCity 50 leaves Athens at 06:58 and calls at Palaiofarsalos at 10:01. The bus leaves at 10:30 and reaches Kalambaka at 12:30. InterCity 56 leaves Athens at 17:58 and reaches Palaiofarsalos at 21:01, and the last bus of the day leaves at 21:15 and arrives in Kalambaka at 23:15.
Going back, the bus leaves Kalambaka at 05:45 and reaches Palaiofarsalos at 07:45, in time for InterCity 51 at 08:02, which arrives in Athens at 11:04. The 16:50 bus reaches Palaiofarsalos at 18:50, and InterCity 57 leaves at 18:56 and arrives in Athens at 21:58.
From Thessaloniki
InterCity 51 leaves Thessaloniki at 05:55 and InterCity 57 at 16:49, and they reach Palaiofarsalos at 08:02 and 18:56. Both arrive well before the buses, so expect a wait of more than two hours at Palaiofarsalos. The morning train and the 10:30 bus come as one booking. For the evening option, book InterCity 57 to Palaiofarsalos and the 21:15 bus separately.
Going back, the 05:45 bus from Kalambaka meets InterCity 50 at Palaiofarsalos at 10:01, which reaches Thessaloniki at 12:10. The 16:50 bus meets InterCity 56 at 21:01, which reaches Thessaloniki at 23:10.
From the station into town
Kalambaka's railway station sits on the south edge of town, below Riga Fereou square. KTEL Trikala's Kalambaka bus station is at the corner of K. Oikonomou and Averof streets, and KTEL lists a Meteora stop at the Monastery of Agios Stefanos.
The Meteora monasteries, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stand on sandstone rock towers just north of the town. A footpath climbs from the Monastery of St Nicholas in Kastraki, the village just north of Kalambaka, through the forest to Ypapanti and on to Great Meteoron and Varlaam. Monasteries do not admit visitors in sleeveless tops or shorts, and women need a skirt below the knee, with wraps lent at the entrance. Opening hours change between winter and summer.
Other ways in
KTEL Trikala runs a direct bus from Athens (Kato Patisia) at 06:30 Monday to Saturday, and from Kalambaka to Athens at 17:45 Monday to Saturday. From Thessaloniki, KTEL Trikala buses run to Trikala through the day, and local KTEL buses connect Trikala and Kalambaka until late evening.
Tickets
Search Athens or Thessaloniki to Kalambaka on the Hellenic Train website or app and the InterCity and the bus come as one booking. In October 2026 a one-way ticket cost €28.30 to €30.90 from Athens and €22.50 to €24.40 from Thessaloniki, depending on the date. The bus alone from Palaiofarsalos costs €5.00. You can also buy by phone on 14511 or at staffed stations such as Athens and Thessaloniki. Kalambaka and Palaiofarsalos have no ticket office on Hellenic Train's list, so buy before you set off. Sales stop 5 minutes before departure.
Tickets are sold on board only for one-way journeys, and only when the ticket office at the boarding station is closed. If you board at a station with an open ticket office and have no ticket, the fine is €10 on top of the fare, or €50 on top of the fare if you refuse to pay on the spot.
Rail passes and reservations
As of October 2026, an Interrail pass is valid on Hellenic Train. InterCity trains need a seat reservation, which is free with a pass, but pass holders pay the InterCity supplement. Make it at a staffed Hellenic Train station such as Athens or Thessaloniki by showing the pass and a passport or identity card. Kalambaka and Palaiofarsalos have no ticket office on Hellenic Train's list, so reserve the return InterCity before you travel out.
Timetable limits
There are only two buses each way. The last bus from Kalambaka leaves at 16:50, and missing the 10:30 bus from Palaiofarsalos means waiting until 21:15. Hellenic Train buses cannot carry wheelchair users. Tickets for December go on sale later in the autumn. Christmas and New Year times had not been published by mid-October 2026.
