Aarhus H is the station for Aarhus and stands in the city centre, with InterCity and InterCityLyn trains from Copenhagen, Odense and Aalborg. Viby J, in the suburb of Viby, is a regional stop that few visitors need.

Arriving at Aarhus H

Aarhus H sits beside the Bruuns Galleri shopping centre in the middle of the city. DSB Salg & Service, the staffed ticket office that also sells international tickets, is open Monday to Friday 08:00 to 17:30 and Saturday and Sunday 10:00 to 16:45. The station also has ticket machines, a hall open day and night, two 7-Eleven shops and luggage boxes at DKK 30 to DKK 80 a day, paid by card.

DSB runs more than 30 departures a day to Copenhagen, Odense and Aalborg. As of October 2026 the InterCityLyn takes about 2 hours 48 minutes to Copenhagen and the slower InterCity a little over 3 hours. Odense takes about 1 hour 30 minutes, Aalborg 1 hour 18 minutes by InterCityLyn or 1 hour 35 minutes by InterCity, and Horsens 28 minutes. Regional trains reach Esbjerg in about 2 hours 20 minutes. Regional trains towards Silkeborg, Herning, Viborg and Struer have been DSB Vores Tog since 1 September 2026, and you buy tickets for them in the DSB app or at DSB ticket machines.

From the station into the centre

The station is in the middle of the city, so most sights are on foot. Strøget, the pedestrian shopping street, starts at Banegårdspladsen in front of the station and runs north to the cathedral on Store Torv. ARoS art museum is a 10-minute walk and Den Gamle By, the open-air town museum, a 15-minute walk. Bus 3A to Den Gamle By runs about every 15 minutes (get off at Viborgvej), and routes 14, 114 and 118 about every 30 minutes.

The Letbane, Aarhus's light rail, also stops at Aarhus H. Line L1 runs through Risskov to Grenaa, and line L2 from Odder through Aarhus H and Universitetshospitalet to Lystrup or Lisbjerg. The lines cross at Aarhus H, Dokk1 and Skolebakken. The Letbane runs between 04:30 and 02:00 depending on the day, with up to eight trains an hour in central Aarhus.

To Aarhus Airport

Bus 925X leaves from Banegårdspladsen, beside Aarhus H, and runs to suit flight times rather than a fixed timetable.

Trains to Hamburg

No train runs straight from Aarhus H to Hamburg. Take an InterCity south to Kolding and change there to the EuroCity-Express or Railjet to Hamburg Hbf. Six to eight connections run a day until 12 December 2026. DSB says engineering works in Germany change many trains between Denmark and Germany until 31 December 2026, so look up the exact connection when you book.

Works at Aarhus H

Banedanmark is rebuilding the tracks and platforms at Aarhus H for electric trains. DSB has run a full timetable since July 2026, all tracks reopen in October 2026, and the rebuild finishes in December 2026.

Viby J

Viby J is a small regional stop on the main line, in the suburb of Viby. DSB regional trains between Aarhus H and Skanderborg, Horsens, Vejle and Fredericia call there, as do the DSB Vores Tog trains to Silkeborg and Herning. Some stop on request only, so press the stop button on the train or stand on the platform. InterCity and InterCityLyn trains do not stop at Viby J. Unless you are staying in Viby, Aarhus H is the easier arrival. The Letbane also has a stop called Viby J, so pick the train station in a journey planner.

Tickets

DSB sells tickets in the DSB app, at dsb.dk, at ticket machines, in 7-Eleven and at DSB Salg & Service. Orange tickets are the cheapest and go on sale about two months before travel, from DKK 54 from Aarhus to Aalborg, DKK 70 to Odense and DKK 119 to Copenhagen. A Standard ticket lets you take any departure that day. Orange tickets are valid on DSB trains and DSB Vores Tog, not on buses or the Letbane. A DSB seat reservation for InterCity and InterCityLyn trains costs DKK 30.

Buses and the Letbane use Midttrafik tickets, and on the city buses and the Letbane you must buy before boarding. A single ticket for one to two zones costs DKK 26, and a day ticket for Aarhus costs DKK 59. Both are sold in the Rejsebillet app.

Rail passes and reservations

As of October 2026, Interrail pass holders need no reservation on regional trains in Denmark, including the trains to Viby J. A reservation on InterCity and InterCityLyn trains is recommended and costs €4. The EuroCity-Express and Railjet trains from Kolding to Hamburg take an optional reservation. A Denmark Pass covers the InterCity to Kolding but not the train on to Hamburg, which needs a Global Pass.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the train from Aarhus to Hamburg take?

About 4 hours 15 minutes to 4 hours 40 minutes in the timetable valid until 12 December 2026. You change trains at Kolding, because no train runs through from Aarhus H.

Do I need to reserve a seat from Copenhagen to Aarhus?

No, a DSB seat reservation is optional on InterCity and InterCityLyn trains. It costs DKK 30 and can be bought in the DSB app up to two months before departure. It is worth having on busy departures if you want to sit together.

How do I get from Aarhus H to Aarhus Airport?

Take bus 925X from Banegårdspladsen beside the station. It takes 45 to 50 minutes and costs DKK 128 for a single ticket, bought in the Rejsebillet app or from the driver by card or cash. Midttrafik sets the departures only two to four weeks ahead, to match flights.

Can I still use a Rejsekort card in Aarhus?

Not the plastic card, which was closed on 30 June 2026. Use Check ind in the DSB app, which works on trains, buses and the Letbane anywhere in Denmark, or the Rejsekort app. Tickets from the Rejsebillet app also work on buses and the Letbane.

Should I use Aarhus H or Viby J?

Aarhus H, unless you are going to Viby. Viby J has only regional trains, some on request, and the InterCity and InterCityLyn trains to Copenhagen, Odense and Aalborg skip it. Aarhus H has the ticket office and the Letbane.
