There is no direct train from Lagos to Lisbon. The standard rail route uses a CP Regional train from Lagos to Tunes, then an Alfa Pendular or Intercidades train from Tunes to Lisbon. The current CP timetable shows five useful daily connections, with the fastest Lagos to Lisboa Oriente journey taking 3h55 and the last departure leaving Lagos at 17:20. Advance fares commonly start around €24 when available, but check CP for the live price on your date.

Route overview

The journey is simple once you understand the transfer. Lagos sits at the western end of the Algarve rail line, so the first train runs east to Tunes. Tunes is the junction where you change to the long-distance train north toward Lisbon.

Both legs are operated by Comboios de Portugal (CP). The Lagos to Tunes leg is a Regional train and takes about one hour in the current CP timetable. The Tunes to Lisbon leg is either Alfa Pendular or Intercidades, with mandatory seat reservation on the long-distance section.

Journey time and frequency

The current CP PDF timetable lists five Lagos departures with timed connections to Lisboa Oriente. All of them require the change at Tunes, so the direct-train frequency is zero and the total rail frequency is five useful through connections per day in the published table.

Use these times as a planning guide, not a substitute for checking your travel date. Timetables can change, and CP notes that connections are guaranteed only under normal operating conditions.

Stations and the Tunes connection

Lagos station is the departure point. It is close to the town centre and practical for travellers staying in the old town or near the marina.

At Tunes, change from the Regional train to the Alfa Pendular or Intercidades service. Tunes is a small junction station, and the connection is usually straightforward. Stay alert to the platform information on the day, especially if the Regional train is delayed.

In Lisbon, the current CP table shows all five connections calling at Entrecampos and Lisboa Oriente. Some also call at Sete Rios. Lisboa Oriente is the most useful default for many travellers because it is a major rail, metro, bus, and taxi interchange. Entrecampos can be more convenient for northern and central Lisbon. Sete Rios is useful only when your chosen train calls there.

Tickets, prices, and reservations

Search Lagos to Lisboa on the CP booking site and check that the itinerary includes both the Lagos to Tunes Regional leg and the Tunes to Lisbon long-distance leg before paying. Avoid buying separate tickets unless the booking flow clearly requires it for your departure.

Indicative one-way fares for this route are usually in the €24 to €35 range when advance fares are available. Alfa Pendular is normally the faster and more comfortable long-distance option; Intercidades can be cheaper depending on the departure and class. Prices change by date, class, and availability, so treat any fare floor as a guide.

Seat reservations are mandatory on Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains. The Regional leg from Lagos to Tunes does not use the same reserved-seat system. If you book online, check the seat and train details for the Tunes to Lisbon section before travelling.

CP tickets are sold online, through the CP app, and at staffed stations. Booking ahead is sensible in summer, on Fridays and Sundays, and before public holidays, because Algarve long-distance services can sell out.

Rail pass validity

Eurail and Interrail passes for Portugal are valid on regular CP trains, including national routes. That makes a pass usable for the Lagos to Lisbon route, but not necessarily the cheapest choice.

The important detail is the reservation. CP requires a booking fee on Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains with compulsory seat reservations, so pass holders still need to reserve the Tunes to Lisbon section before boarding. For a single domestic trip, compare the pass day value plus reservation fee against a normal point-to-point fare before using a travel day.

Train and bus alternatives

The train is comfortable and predictable, but it is not always the cheapest or fastest way to reach Lisbon from Lagos.

Choose the train if you prefer rail travel, want to arrive at Lisbon rail stations, or are connecting onward by train or metro. Choose the bus if the fare is much lower, the timetable fits better, or you want to avoid the Tunes transfer.

Practical booking tips

Book the whole rail journey in one search from Lagos to Lisboa rather than searching each leg separately.

Leave a sensible buffer if you have a flight or another fixed connection in Lisbon. The last listed rail departure from Lagos is 17:20 in the current CP table, which arrives at Lisboa Oriente at 21:56.

Check your Lisbon arrival station before booking accommodation transfers. Oriente, Entrecampos, and Sete Rios are not interchangeable for every traveller.

For pass travel, arrange the Alfa Pendular or Intercidades reservation before boarding. Do not assume the pass alone is enough for the reserved long-distance section.
