Choosing between bus and catamaran
A bus is the practical choice for year-round travel. FlixBus runs up to 8 trips a day on this corridor, while Arriva runs one daily service. Departures vary by travel date, and road traffic can lengthen the journey.
Catamarans are a seasonal alternative over the Adriatic. Krilo sails daily from Split Ferry Port to Dubrovnik Gruz Port from 1 April to 31 October. The boat leaves Split at 08:00 and takes 4 hours 40 minutes, calling at Milna, Hvar, Korcula and Mljet. TP Line runs two lines. Line 654 runs from 8 May to 18 October, leaves Split at 09:00 and takes 5 hours 15 minutes. Line 842 runs from 1 April to 31 October, leaves Split at 15:10 and takes 5 hours 10 minutes. The last Split departure on line 842 is 30 October. After the season ends, there are no catamarans until spring, so take a bus.
Leaving Split
Buses leave from Split Bus Station at Obala kneza Domagoja 12. FlixBus lists a second Split stop at the ferry port, so follow the stop printed on your ticket. Catamarans leave from Split Ferry Port, including the Gat Sv. Duje area. Krilo's ticket kiosk is at the ferry terminal; arrive at least 15 minutes before the published departure.
Arriving in Dubrovnik
Buses arrive at Dubrovnik Bus Station in Gruz at Obala pape Ivana Pavla II 44A. The terminal is close to the port and about 2 kilometres from the centre. The walk to the historic Old City takes about 30 to 40 minutes; Libertas buses to Pile usually take 10 to 15 minutes and run every 10 to 20 minutes.
Catamarans arrive at Dubrovnik Gruz Port. From there, use a Libertas city bus, walk if you have time and light luggage, or take a taxi to the Old City. Check the port or operator instructions for the pier on your sailing ticket.
Tickets and Interrail
For a bus, buy an ordinary point-to-point ticket from the bus operator or station for your chosen date. For a catamaran, buy a separate passenger ticket from the sailing operator. Interrail Passes are not valid on buses or trams in Croatia, so a pass does not cover this journey. The Croatia pass guide offers a ferry discount for Split to Ancona, not for these domestic sailings.
How often do services run?
Buses run all year. Catamarans run daily in season only: Krilo and TP Line line 842 until 31 October, and TP Line line 654 until 18 October. The dates change each year, so check your exact date before you book a hotel or onward connection.
