The two operators to compare are České dráhy and RegioJet. České dráhy gives you the broadest choice of departures, including railjet and EC Metropolitan services. RegioJet is worth checking for low fares and assigned-seat travel on its yellow trains.

RegioJet also runs direct Prague-Brno trains. It can be a good pick when the departure time and price beat ČD. Leo Express is not a practical choice for this route based on current official source evidence, which points to ČD and RegioJet as the direct train options.

Train Options From Prague To Brno

You do not need to change trains between Prague and Brno if you choose the normal direct services.

The main route runs from Praha hl.n. through eastern Bohemia toward Brno hl.n. ČD’s railjet route page lists Praha hl.n., Pardubice hl.n., Česká Třebová, Brno hl.n., and onward stops toward Břeclav, Vienna, and Graz. That is the same corridor used by many of the fastest Prague-Brno trains.

ČD says it runs between Brno and Prague every hour, with up to three departures in an hour at peak times. Its route page also says it offers 34 daily connections on the corridor, including overnight options.

For most travelers, the railjet or EC Metropolitan is the train to look for. ČD’s comparison table gives both a Prague to Brno time of 2 hours 36 minutes and only two stops over the full trip. Railjet trains also bring a comfortable onboard setup on this route, with air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, power sockets, a restaurant carriage, and several seating classes.

RegioJet Direct Trains

RegioJet is the other direct train option to check before you buy.

RegioJet’s Prague-Brno route page says its express trains run several times daily between Prague and Brno. Its Czech page advertises Prague-Brno tickets from 99 CZK, while its English Czech Republic page lists Brno from Prague from 3.70 EUR.

The trade-off is that RegioJet works more like a reservation-based intercity product. You choose a specific train and class, and passholders need a seat reservation on RJ category services.

Slower R19 Trains

The ČD R19 fast train is still direct, but it is slower.

ČD’s comparison table gives the R19 a Prague to Brno time of 3 hours 04 minutes and 12 stops. That can still be useful if the fare is good or if the departure time fits your day better. If you simply want the quickest trip, pick the railjet, EC Metropolitan, or a well-timed RegioJet train first.

Tickets And Fares

Prague-Brno train tickets can be inexpensive, but the cheapest fares are not available on every train.

Use official lead-in prices as orientation, then check your exact date. ČD’s route index showed Praha-Brno from 119 CZK when checked for this article. ČD’s dedicated Brno-Prague route page also advertised 2nd class from 202 CZK with an IN 25 discount card. RegioJet advertised Prague-Brno tickets from 99 CZK on its Czech route page, and its English Czech Republic page listed Brno from Prague from 3.70 EUR.

For a simple trip, compare ČD and RegioJet on the same day before booking. If the price difference is small, choose the departure that gives you the best time and station convenience.

Stations And Boarding

Most Prague to Brno trains use Praha hl.n. and Brno hl.n.

Praha hl.n. is Prague’s main station. Interrail notes that metro line C runs through the station and that bus and tram stops are outside. Give yourself a little extra time if this is your first Czech train trip, because platforms are posted shortly before departure on the station boards.

Brno hl.n. is the central arrival station in Brno. RegioJet’s station data places its Brno main station stop at Nádražní 418/1, which is the station area most visitors mean when they say “Brno main station”.

Check your ticket for the exact Prague stop. Some trains may also call at Praha-Libeň or another Prague station, but Praha hl.n. is the safest default for most visitors staying in central Prague.

Interrail And Eurail Passes

Interrail and Eurail can work well on Prague to Brno, but the reservation rules depend on the operator.

Use a Global Pass or a Czech Republic Pass for this domestic Czech trip. On ČD railjet and EC services, standard seat reservations are generally optional, though Business Class on railjet requires a reservation.

RegioJet is stricter for passholders. RegioJet says Eurail and Interrail passes are valid on its train network in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria, but RJ category services require seat reservations.
