Interrail and Eurail
Pass Activation
Pass activation sets up a rail pass for use; it is separate from the validity start date, Flexi Travel Day activation, journeys and required reservations.
Also known as: activate a rail pass, activating an Interrail Pass, activating a Eurail Pass, pass start date
Pass activation is the setup step that makes a rail pass ready for use. For a mobile Interrail or Eurail Pass, you enter the passport or identity-document number and choose a start date. The pass must be activated before you board the first train, but activation is not the same as the validity period beginning, boarding, or adding a particular journey.
Activation and the validity start date
For a mobile Interrail Pass, the selected start date sets when its Validity Period begins. Under current Interrail terms, that period starts at 00:00 on the selected date and ends at 23:59:59 on the final date. The pass is considered used once the Validity Period has commenced. Before it begins, a mobile Interrail Pass can be deactivated under applicable conditions.
This creates an important boundary: you can activate a mobile pass before the trip, while its contractual validity starts on the chosen date. Activation is a preparation step, not the moment when you board your first train. The product and its conditions determine how long the pass remains valid.
What to do with a mobile pass
Choose the first planned Pass-use date and enter the identity-document number you will carry. For an Interrail mobile Pass, you cannot board the first train until the Pass is activated. An Interrail mobile Pass can be activated up to 11 months after purchase, subject to the product and applicable conditions.
After activation, add each train journey to the mobile Pass before boarding. This records the service you intend to take; it does not activate the Pass. If the train requires a seat reservation, arrange that separately: activating a Pass or adding a journey does not reserve a place.
Flexi Travel Day activation is separate
A Flexi Pass gives you a limited number of Travel Days inside its Validity Period. Activating one of those Travel Days selects a date on which the pass can be used. It is a daily-use action after the pass setup, not the definition of Pass activation itself. The exact order and controls depend on the pass format and product instructions, but the two actions should not be treated as interchangeable.
For example, a traveller can activate a mobile pass with 12 August as its start date, then activate a Flexi Travel Day for that date and add the specific train journey before boarding. The three steps affect different things: the pass setup, the daily allowance and the individual service record.
Paper passes and the Interrail and Eurail distinction
Paper-pass rules differ between Interrail and Eurail. Version 19 of the Interrail Conditions of Use, effective from 10 September 2026, removed the former paper Pass activation clause. It sets current Interrail mobile activation rules and paper-pass requirements for marking Flexi dates and recording journeys in My Trip before boarding, but it does not provide a current Interrail paper activation procedure.
For a Eurail paper Pass, activation can be arranged during online ordering or at a large European station before use. The Eurail 2026 rules also allow the first date of travel to differ from the activation date. Do not carry that Eurail paper workflow over to a current Interrail Pass: Version 19 governs Interrail separately.
Common confusion
Pass activation is not selecting or starting a Travel Day, adding a train journey, making a reservation, or taking the first physical trip. For a current Interrail mobile Pass, validity begins at the selected start-date boundary; you must still add the journey before boarding and make any required reservation separately.
Keep the identity document used for activation with you when travelling. When instructions differ by product or format, follow the conditions for that specific pass.
Frequently asked questions
What does pass activation mean?
Pass activation sets up a rail pass for use by linking it to your identity document and choosing a start date. It is separate from adding a train journey or making a seat reservation.
Is pass activation the same as the first day of validity?
No. A mobile pass can be activated before travelling, while its Validity Period begins on the selected start date. Current Interrail rules say the pass is considered used once that period has commenced.
Is activating a Flexi Travel Day the same as activating a pass?
No. Pass activation sets up the pass. Flexi Travel Day activation selects one of the available daily-use dates within the pass's Validity Period.
Does pass activation add my train journey or reserve a seat?
No. After activating a mobile pass, you still add each journey before boarding. If a seat reservation is required, arrange it separately; neither activation nor journey entry reserves a place.
