Flexi vs Continuous Pass

Flexi and Continuous describe how a rail pass uses Travel Days within its Validity Period. They are different ways to allocate pass days, not two names for the same kind of ticket.

The difference

A Flexi Pass gives you a fixed number of Travel Days within a fixed Validity Period. You choose the calendar dates on which to use those days. For example, a 5-days-in-1-month Flexi Pass lets you select five dates inside that one-month window.

A Continuous Pass makes every date in its Validity Period a Travel Day. A 1-month Continuous Pass therefore gives you a Travel Day on every date in that month. It does not mean that every train is included: the pass product still determines the countries or network covered, and some services have separate reservation or supplement rules.

Which allocation fits

Flexi is usually the better match for an itinerary with rest days, longer stays or several days when you do not expect to travel by rail. You can spread the selected Travel Days across the Validity Period, but each chosen date uses one of the days in your allowance.

Continuous is simpler when you expect to travel on most dates in the validity window. You do not ration a limited number of Travel Days, although the pass's product coverage and any service-specific conditions still apply. There is no universal cheaper option: the useful choice depends on how often you plan to use rail and which pass products are available for your trip.

Activation and journey records

For Interrail, the current Version 19 Conditions of Use apply the following mobile rule. Activate a Flexi Travel Day before boarding the first service on that calendar day. You can cancel the Travel Day before 00:00 local time; if you do not, the day is used and cannot be deactivated or refunded under those conditions. Continuous Travel Days are activated when the Validity Period is set and can be deactivated only before the overall period begins.

Activating the pass or a Flexi Travel Day is separate from adding a journey to a mobile pass. The 2026 Interrail guide says to add each journey in My Trip before boarding. For a paper pass, mark the selected Flexi date in the Travel Calendar before boarding; for both pass types, record each Journey in My Trip before boarding. A journey record is not a seat reservation.

Eurail's 2026 guide uses the same Flexi and Continuous distinction, local midnight boundaries and journey-entry steps. Eurail pass holders should follow the Eurail guide and the conditions for their specific product; Interrail Version 19 is not a Eurail contractual source.

Travel Days and overnight trains

A Travel Day follows local calendar time from 00:00 to 23:59. It is not a 24-hour period that starts when you board. For a direct overnight train leaving at 18:10 on 11 August and arriving at 02:15 on 12 August, a Flexi holder records 11 August only when there is no train change after midnight and both dates fall within the Pass's Validity Period. A train change after midnight needs another Travel Day.

Reservations are separate

A Travel Day lets you use the pass on a date; it does not guarantee a seat. Depending on the service, you may also need a seat reservation or supplement, with the exact requirement set by the product and service. A pass activation and a journey record do not replace that separate reservation step.
