Hallstatt to Salzburg is a two-part train journey with a short boat crossing at the start. Walk to Hallstatt Markt, take the Hallstättersee Schifffahrt ferry across to Hallstatt Bahnhof, then travel via Attnang-Puchheim to Salzburg Hbf. Allow 2 hours 35 minutes to 3 hours overall, including the boat.

The route via Hallstatt Bahnhof

Hallstatt village is on the western shore of Hallstätter See, while Hallstatt Bahnhof is across the lake. Walk from the village to the Hallstatt Markt landing stage and take the Hallstättersee Schifffahrt ferry to the station. The crossing takes about seven minutes. The ferry is a separate cash service, so keep euros for the ticket.

From Hallstatt Bahnhof, take the ÖBB Salzkammergutbahn train towards Attnang-Puchheim. Change there for Salzburg Hbf. The fastest trains take about 2 hours 15 minutes from Hallstatt Bahnhof to Salzburg Hbf. With the ferry and the wait for your train, the best connections take about 2 hours 35 minutes from the landing stage and slower ones about 3 hours. There is no direct train from Hallstatt village to Salzburg.

Times, changes and operators

Several Hallstatt Bahnhof to Attnang-Puchheim trains run through the day, and frequent main-line trains continue from Attnang-Puchheim to Salzburg. Connections to Salzburg leave every one to two hours, and the ferry timetable sets the first part of the journey.

ÖBB runs the Hallstatt Bahnhof to Attnang-Puchheim train and onward services to Salzburg Hbf. Westbahn also serves the Attnang-Puchheim to Salzburg Hbf corridor, so you can use a Westbahn service for the onward leg where it suits your timetable. The change from the Hallstatt train is still at Attnang-Puchheim.

Allow a margin at Attnang-Puchheim. If a delay makes you miss the onward service, take the next suitable train for your travel day. The ferry operator does not guarantee onward transport after a missed connection or a cancelled sailing, so leave time between the ferry and your train rather than planning a tight connection.

Fares, reservations and rail passes

The Hallstättersee Schifffahrt fare is €4 one way or €8 return between Hallstatt Markt and Hallstatt Bahnhof. The ferry accepts cash only. This separate boat fare is not covered by a train ticket or rail pass.

Buy tickets for the trains you use, or travel on an Interrail Global Pass or Austria pass, which cover ÖBB trains. Westbahn lists the Global Pass as valid, so check before using an Austria pass on it. The ferry is not covered by any rail pass.

Seat reservations are optional on domestic ÖBB trains and can be added when booking. The regional train from Hallstatt Bahnhof does not require a reservation.

Getting to Salzburg Hbf

Your rail arrival is Salzburg Hbf, the city’s main station. Keep the two Hallstatt points separate in your plan: Hallstatt Markt is the landing stage in the village, while Hallstatt Bahnhof is across the lake and reached by ferry.

If you are leaving Hallstatt later in the day, start with the ferry timetable. The Market-to-station timetable is valid through 13 December 2026, and the last sailing is at 17:45. Leave enough time to reach the landing stage and allow extra margin if trains are delayed.
