Graz Hbf handles almost every long-distance train in the city. Since the Koralm railway opened in December 2025, Klagenfurt is closer by train than Vienna, while the trip to Vienna still crosses the Semmering pass.
Arriving at Graz Hbf
Railjets from Vienna, Interregio trains, the Westbahn and the S-Bahn all use Graz Hbf. The tram stop is underground, below the station forecourt, and ticket machines stand at the stop and on the forecourt by bus stop 58/63. Lockers hold luggage for 24 hours.
Trains to and from Graz
Vienna: ÖBB trains run almost every half hour and take about 2 hours 30 minutes, because the line still climbs over the Semmering and the Semmering Base Tunnel is not open. The Westbahn adds five trains a day in each direction from Wien Hbf through Graz to Klagenfurt and Villach (timetable valid until 12 December 2026).
Klagenfurt and Salzburg: the Koralm railway opened on 14 December 2025. The Railjet Xpress takes 41 minutes from Graz to Klagenfurt, and ÖBB runs 29 connections a day. Seven direct trains a day run from Graz to Salzburg via Klagenfurt and Villach and take about 3 hours 50 minutes; with a change in Villach the fastest trips take about 3 hours 30 minutes.
Interregio trains run to Linz and Innsbruck every two hours and to Maribor every hour. Two to four direct trains a day run to Ljubljana, depending on the day, in about 3 hours 10 to 3 hours 30 minutes, and one direct Eurocity a day runs to Zagreb in a little over 4 hours. The ÖBB Nightjet links Graz with Zürich overnight.
From the station into the centre
Trams 1, 4, 6 and 7 leave from the underground tram stop below the station forecourt every few minutes and reach the Hauptplatz/Congress stop in about 6 minutes. The hour ticket costs €3.30 and the 24-hour ticket €7.20. Buy one at the machines at the stop, in the tram or in the GrazMobil app. Tram 4 also runs straight from the station to the Murpark terminus.
Trams are free in the old town from Südtiroler Platz onwards: to Kaiser-Josef-Platz on lines 1 and 7, to Dietrichsteinplatz on line 6 and to Finanzamt on line 4. The station stop lies outside that stretch, so the ride from Graz Hbf needs a ticket.
For the Schlossberg, the Schloßbergbahn funicular leaves every 15 minutes from Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Kai 38, off the Sackstraße north of the Hauptplatz, about 10 minutes from Graz Hbf by tram with one change. Any valid Graz city ticket covers it. From 1 October to 31 March it runs Sunday to Thursday from 10:00 to 24:00 and Friday and Saturday from 10:00 to 02:00; from 1 April it starts at 09:00.
Tickets
ÖBB sells standard tickets and cheaper Sparschiene fares, which you can book up to six months ahead online or in the ÖBB app. The Westbahn sells its own tickets. Verbund Linie tickets cover trams, buses and S-Bahn trains in the Styrian network. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays the Freizeit-Ticket Steiermark costs €15 and covers the whole network, including the Graz city lines, S-Bahn, regional and Interregio trains, and the Schloßbergbahn.
The KlimaTicket Österreich costs €1,400 a year. The regional KlimaTicket Steiermark is not valid on long-distance trains that cross into another state, such as the trains through the Koralm tunnel to Klagenfurt.
The other Graz stations
Graz Köflacher Bahnhof is a stop for GKB's S7 to Köflach and S61 to Deutschlandsberg, two minutes after they leave Graz Hbf. Use it only if you are staying nearby.
Graz Ostbahnhof-Messe and Graz-Liebenau Murpark are on the S-Bahn line to Gleisdorf, with at least one train an hour from Graz Hbf on weekdays. Ostbahnhof-Messe, for the fair grounds, is about 7 minutes from Hbf. Murpark is about 10 minutes away, at the shopping centre where tram 4 ends and a park-and-ride car park stands.
Graz Don Bosco, one stop and 2 to 3 minutes from Hbf, is a junction where ÖBB trains towards Leibnitz and Gleisdorf and GKB's S6 to Wies-Eibiswald all call. Graz Puntigam Bahnhof, about 5 to 6 minutes south of Hbf, is served by ÖBB trains towards Leibnitz and by the S6.
Rail passes and reservations
As of October 2026, seat reservations are optional on domestic trips in Austria, so domestic Railjet and Interregio trains need none. Regional trains need no reservation. An Interrail pass covers the Westbahn between Vienna, Graz, Klagenfurt and Villach, and pass holders can buy a Standard Class reservation. Night trains always need a paid reservation, including the Nightjet to Zürich. An Austria One Country Pass covers a trip only as far as the border; for Maribor, Ljubljana or Zagreb you need a Global Pass or a ticket beyond Austria. GKB is a private railway that Interrail does not include, so buy a Verbund Linie ticket for the S6, S61 and S7.
