Durham station is the one you need: it sits on North Road, west of the old town, and LNER, CrossCountry and TransPennine Express all stop there. The city centre around Market Place is roughly a 10-minute walk away, uphill, and the Cathedral Bus runs to the cathedral and castle.

## Arriving at Durham station

The station is on the main line between York and Newcastle and is the only station in the city. Lifts and a subway connect the platforms, and there is step-free access to every platform. The ticket office is open 06:00 to 18:00 Monday to Friday, 07:00 to 17:00 on Saturday and 09:00 to 16:00 on Sunday, and ticket machines stand on both platforms.

The old town, with Market Place, the castle and the cathedral, sits on a loop of the River Wear above the station. The walk to the centre takes around 10 minutes and is a climb. A taxi from the rank at the station reaches the cathedral in around 5 minutes.

The Cathedral Bus, service 40, is the easy option with luggage. It calls at North Road, the Leazes Road underpass and Market Place, for the cathedral and the castle. A ticket costs £1.20, or 60p for children aged 15 and under, and is valid all day. It runs Monday to Saturday, not in the evening and not on bank holidays. A Sunday summer service runs until 1 November 2026, and a Saturday timetable applies on weekdays between Christmas and New Year. Durham is also a PlusBus area, so you can add unlimited local bus travel to a rail ticket.

## Trains from Durham

These journeys follow the timetable that runs until 12 December 2026. A new timetable starts on 13 December 2026.

- **London King's Cross:** From London, LNER runs about 10 direct trains to Durham each weekday, leaving between 06:15 and 22:00. The journey takes around 3 hours.
- **Newcastle:** TransPennine Express and CrossCountry trains take 10 to 12 minutes.
- **Edinburgh Waverley:** LNER runs direct trains, around 15 each weekday, in about 1 hour 48 minutes.
- **York:** TransPennine Express takes around 44 minutes.
- **Leeds:** TransPennine Express takes about 1 hour 15 minutes.
- **Manchester Piccadilly:** TransPennine Express runs direct trains in about 2 hours.
- **Birmingham New Street and Bristol Temple Meads:** CrossCountry runs direct trains to Birmingham New Street in about 2 hours 40 minutes to 3 hours 10 minutes. Trains that run via Leeds continue to Bristol Temple Meads, about 4 hours 50 minutes from Durham.

## Engineering works and Christmas

From Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November 2026, major work at York station disrupts trains south of Durham. On weekdays TransPennine Express trains from the north end at York. Buses replace CrossCountry trains between Darlington and Leeds on 24 and 25 October and on 31 October and 1 November, and LNER trains between Darlington and Doncaster on 31 October and 1 November, so allow extra time for London, York, Leeds and Birmingham.

On Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November 2026 no trains run between London King's Cross and Peterborough, so plan London journeys for another day.

Over Christmas 2026, the line between Retford and York is closed on Thursday 24 December. There are no LNER trains between London and York that day, coaches run between Newark Northgate and York, and the last trains leave much earlier than usual. No LNER trains run on Friday 25 or Saturday 26 December. On Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 December the 20:03 King's Cross to Edinburgh train ends at Newcastle, so take the 19:33 from King's Cross, which runs through to Edinburgh. On Thursday 31 December the last LNER train from Newcastle to London King's Cross leaves at 20:04, and first trains on Friday 1 January start later than usual.

## Tickets

Advance tickets are valid only on the date and train named and can usually be bought up to 12 weeks ahead. LNER says booking at least four weeks ahead can save up to 45% against a Standard ticket bought on the day. Off-Peak tickets let you travel on any permitted train outside the morning peak. In general, Off-Peak hours begin at 09:30 Monday to Friday in cities and large towns and at 09:00 elsewhere, and weekends and bank holidays are Off-Peak all day. Anytime tickets are valid on any train at any time. Most National Railcards take a third off Advance and Off-Peak fares, and some also cover Anytime fares.

Buy before you board. Use the ticket office, a machine or an app.

## Rail passes and reservations

As of October 2026, an Interrail pass covers LNER, CrossCountry and TransPennine Express, the three operators at Durham. TransPennine Express trains need no reservation, and a CrossCountry reservation is recommended but not required. LNER trains need no reservation, but seat reservations are free with a pass and must match the class of your pass, so one is worth having on busy London and Edinburgh trains.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I walk from Durham station to the cathedral with luggage?

You can, but the way to the old town is a climb, and the cathedral sits further up on the peninsula. With bags, take the Cathedral Bus or a taxi from the rank at the station. There is no left luggage at the station, so carry your bags or leave them where you are staying.

### How do I get from Durham to Newcastle Airport?

Take a train to Newcastle, which takes 10 to 12 minutes, then the Tyne and Wear Metro from Newcastle Central to the airport. The Metro journey between the city centre and the airport takes around 25 minutes. Metro trains run from about 05:30 (06:20 on Sundays) until midnight.

### Is Durham station step-free?

Yes. Durham is a category A station with step-free access to all platforms, using lifts to the subway between them. Staff help is available 24 hours Monday to Saturday and 07:00 to 23:59 on Sunday, and the meeting point for assistance is the ticket office.

### Can I park at Durham station?

Yes. The station car park has 423 spaces and is open 24 hours a day.

### Is Durham a good day trip from Newcastle or Edinburgh?

Yes. Newcastle is 10 to 12 minutes away and Edinburgh Waverley about 1 hour 48 minutes on a direct LNER train. The Cathedral Bus does not run in the evening, so plan your return train around the walk back down to the station.
