Aberdeen has one station, inside Union Square on Guild Street, and ScotRail, LNER, CrossCountry and the Caledonian Sleeper all use it. Union Street, the city's main street, is an easy walk away.

## Arriving at Aberdeen station

The station is part of the Union Square shopping centre, with the bus station alongside. Step-free access reaches every platform, and a taxi rank, a ticket office and ticket machines are on site. The ticket office is open 06:15 to 21:30 Monday to Friday, 06:15 to 19:00 on Saturday and 08:45 to 21:30 on Sunday. There is no left-luggage service, so plan to carry bags or leave them at your hotel.

From Union Square you can walk to Union Street. Castlegate, the old market square with the Mercat Cross, lies at the eastern end of the street. First Aberdeen runs the city buses, and many take contactless payment. When buses replace trains, they leave from College Street beside the car park, not from the front of the station.

## Trains from Aberdeen

ScotRail runs the frequent services, and these are the average weekday journey times:

- Dundee: about 1 hour 15 minutes, with up to 35 trains a day.
- Edinburgh: about 2 hours 35 minutes, with up to 20 trains a day.
- Glasgow Queen Street: about 2 hours 50 minutes, with up to 24 trains a day.
- Inverness: about 2 hours 15 minutes, with up to 11 trains a day.

The Edinburgh and Glasgow timetable runs until 12 December 2026, and a new timetable starts on 13 December.

LNER runs direct trains between Aberdeen and London King's Cross in about 7 hours 10 minutes, with about three a day on weekdays. CrossCountry leaves Aberdeen at 08:20 from Monday to Saturday for Dundee, Edinburgh, Newcastle and Birmingham. An evening train runs to Edinburgh at 21:35 from Monday to Saturday and at 21:20 on Sunday. This timetable runs until 12 December 2026.

## The Caledonian Sleeper

The sleeper to London Euston leaves Aberdeen at 20:26 from Monday to Thursday nights, 21:43 on Fridays and 20:36 on Sundays, and arrives at 08:00. Going north, it leaves Euston at 21:15 from Monday to Friday nights and 21:00 on Sundays, reaching Aberdeen at 07:50. The trip takes between about 10 hours 15 minutes and 11 hours 35 minutes depending on the night. There are no sleepers on Saturday nights in either direction. This timetable runs until 12 December 2026.

## Tickets

ScotRail ended peak fares on 1 September 2025, so an Anytime ticket now costs what an Off-Peak ticket used to and is valid at any time of day. Advance singles run between Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness. They start at £15.30 to Edinburgh or Glasgow and £11.60 to Dundee or Inverness, go on sale about 12 weeks ahead and stay on sale until 18:00 the day before. They are tied to one train and cannot be refunded. National Railcard discounts apply to Advance fares.

Buy before you board. If you step on a ScotRail train at a station with a ticket office or machine and have no ticket, the minimum on-board fare is £10 or the full undiscounted fare, whichever is higher, and railcards do not count. An mTicket bought after boarding does not count either. LNER and CrossCountry sell their own tickets, and LNER charges no booking fee.

## Ferries and the airport

The NorthLink ferries to Orkney and Shetland leave from Jamieson's Quay, directly across the road from Union Square. The Stagecoach 727 bus runs to Aberdeen Airport up to every 15 minutes from Union Square Bus Station, stance 3, and also stops on Union Street at Adelphi. The ride takes at least 30 minutes. A single costs £5.50 and a 28-day return £10.50. The airport has no train station; the nearest is Dyce.

## Rail passes and reservations

As of October 2026, an Interrail pass covers ScotRail, LNER, CrossCountry and the Caledonian Sleeper. ScotRail, LNER and CrossCountry trains need no reservation. LNER seat reservations are free, and a seat reservation is recommended on CrossCountry. The Caledonian Sleeper needs a compulsory reservation: a seat has no extra charge and is booked through the Sleeper's Guest Service Centre, while a Classic Room costs £145 solo or £175 twin, and a Club Room costs £195 solo with a first class pass.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is there a train from Aberdeen station to Aberdeen Airport?

No. The airport has no station of its own; Dyce is the nearest, and a bus connects it to the airport. The simpler route is the Stagecoach 727 from Union Square Bus Station, stance 3, which stops outside the main terminal.

### Which ferries leave Aberdeen for Orkney and Shetland?

NorthLink sails overnight to Lerwick in Shetland every night, arriving at 07:30. On some nights the ship leaves at 17:00 and calls at Kirkwall (Hatston) in Orkney at 23:00: on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday until 31 October 2026, and on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 1 November to 31 December. On the other nights it leaves at 19:00 and sails direct to Lerwick. There are no sailings on 24, 25 and 31 December 2026. The terminal is at Jamieson's Quay, across the road from Union Square.

### Can I pay for my train ticket on board?

Only where there was no way to buy one. If the ticket office and machines at your station were open, ScotRail charges at least £10, or the full undiscounted fare if that is higher, and an mTicket bought after boarding does not count.

### What is the cheapest way to travel from Aberdeen to Edinburgh or Glasgow?

Book a ScotRail Advance single, which starts at £15.30 and is released about 12 weeks ahead. Early morning, middle of the day and late evening trains tend to have the most left. A National Railcard cuts the price further.

### Does the Caledonian Sleeper run every night?

It runs every night except Saturday, in both directions. From Aberdeen, Friday and Sunday departures leave at different times from the rest of the week; from London only the Sunday departure differs.
