There is no direct train from [Venice](<https://everyrail.com/italy/venice/>) to [Paris](<https://everyrail.com/france/paris/>). The fastest single-change route takes about 10 hours 48 minutes, so treat this as a full day of travel rather than a quick hop.

## Venice to Paris by train at a glance

| Detail | What to expect |
| --- | --- |
| Direct service | None. Every journey needs at least one change |
| Fastest journey | About 10 hours 48 minutes, on the same-operator Trenitalia route via Milan |
| Typical range | About 13 to 15 hours on weekday TGV-via-Turin connections, or as fast as about 11 hours on the quickest weekend TGV departure |
| Departure station | Venice Santa Lucia |
| Change station | Milan Centrale (Trenitalia route) or Turin Porta Susa and Milan Porta Garibaldi (SNCF route) |
| Arrival station | Paris Gare de Lyon |
| Sleeper option | None direct, but a Paris to Stuttgart TGV plus Nightjet to Venice is a genuine overnight alternative |
| Distance | About 1,148 km (713 miles) by rail |
| Alpine closure | No trains between Paris and Turin or Milan from 12 September to 9 October 2026; normal service resumes afterwards |

These are indicative times from the current published timetable, and fares change by train and date, so check current prices directly with [Trenitalia](<https://everyrail.com/italy/trenitalia/>) or SNCF Connect before booking. See the closure note below if you are travelling in September or October 2026.

## Which Venice station, and where you arrive in Paris

Venice Santa Lucia sits on the island, right at the edge of the Grand Canal, and it is the station every train in this guide uses. Do not confuse it with Venezia Mestre on the mainland, which serves a different and less central part of the city; if a booking page shows only "Venice," open the train details and confirm Santa Lucia before you pay.

In Paris, every route in this guide arrives at Gare de [Lyon](<https://everyrail.com/france/lyon/>), in the city's twelfth arrondissement and well connected to the Métro and RER. It is not the same station as Gare du Nord, so check your ticket carefully if you are also connecting onward by Eurostar or a train from northern France.

## Choosing your route: Trenitalia or the TGV via Turin

Two single-change routes cover this corridor, and the choice comes down to operator and reliability protection.

For most travellers, book the all-Trenitalia route. A late-morning Frecciarossa leaves Venice Santa Lucia around 11:48, reaching [Milan](<https://everyrail.com/italy/milan/>) Centrale in the early afternoon. After about an hour and a half to grab a coffee, a second Frecciarossa continues to Paris Gare de Lyon, arriving around 22:36. Because both legs belong to the same operator, a delay that causes a missed connection carries a legal entitlement to rebooking onto a later Trenitalia service at no extra cost.

The alternative uses an early Frecciarossa from Venice to [Turin](<https://everyrail.com/italy/turin/>) Porta Susa, then SNCF's TGV onward to Paris. Weekday departures leave Venice around 08:18 and, depending on which Turin connection you take, reach Paris Gare de Lyon at either 21:14 or 23:14 the same day, a journey of around 13 to 15 hours. Weekend departures follow a different pattern and can be quicker, with the fastest weekend connection reaching Paris in around 11 hours. This route crosses two separate rail companies, so a missed connection is your own problem to solve rather than a guaranteed free rebooking.

The TGV route has one real advantage: pass coverage. Interrail and Eurail passes currently cover Frecciarossa travel within Italy and the Turin to Paris TGV, but not the cross-border [Milan to Paris](<https://everyrail.com/trains/milan-to-paris/>) Frecciarossa, so pass holders should build their itinerary around the Turin change rather than the all-Trenitalia route.

On some TGV departures, the Paris-bound train leaves from Milan Porta Garibaldi rather than Milan Centrale, a short metro ride, taxi ride, or 25-minute walk away. Check which Milan station your ticket shows before you plan your connection time.

## Check for the autumn 2026 Alpine closure before you book

Engineering work to connect the new Lyon-Turin base tunnel closes the high-speed line between France and Italy from 12 September to 9 October 2026, confirmed directly on SNCF's own booking site and corroborated by SNCF Réseau's infrastructure works schedule. No train runs between Paris, Mâcon, Chambéry, Modane, Oulx, Turin or Milan during that window, so neither route above operates at all during it, regardless of which operator you book. Normal service is scheduled to resume from 10 October 2026.

If your travel date falls inside that window, plan to route via Switzerland instead, changing onto the Gotthard or Simplon line into Milan or Turin. It adds a change and usually costs more, but it is the only way through while the line is closed. Confirm current departures directly with Trenitalia or SNCF before booking, since maintenance schedules on Alpine lines can shift.

## No direct sleeper, but a real overnight alternative

The direct Venice to Paris sleeper train was discontinued in 2020 and has not resumed, and neither of the day routes above offers an overnight option.

There is still a genuine way to sleep through most of the journey. Take an afternoon TGV from Paris to Stuttgart, then board the ÖBB Nightjet sleeper south to Venice, arriving mid-morning with breakfast included. Nightjet runs seats, couchettes and sleeper cabins on this route, including single-berth deluxe cabins with their own shower and toilet, and ÖBB's discounted Sparschiene fares, bookable up to six months ahead, give the lowest prices. Check current fares directly on nightjet.com and sncf-connect.com rather than a fixed figure, since both are dynamically priced. It is a longer way round than the day trains, but it turns a full day of sitting into a night you would spend asleep anyway.

## Fares, booking, and rail passes

Fares on both routes change by train and date, so there is no reliable starting price to quote here: check current fares directly on trenitalia.com for the all-Trenitalia route, or on trenitalia.com and sncf-connect.com together for the TGV-via-Turin route. The all-Trenitalia route offers Standard, Business and a premium Executive class with at-seat food; book both legs together in one transaction where the retailer allows it, since separate bookings can lose any through-fare discount and will not protect you if you miss the connection.

Booking on both routes typically opens around four months ahead, and both are ticketless: you show your booking reference or a QR code on your phone rather than collecting a paper ticket.

If you hold an Interrail or Eurail pass, reservations are still compulsory on both the Frecciarossa within Italy and the Turin to Paris TGV, and you pay a separate reservation fee even though the pass covers the travel day itself.

## The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is a different trip

If you have seen the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express advertised for this route, know that it is a different product entirely: a multi-day heritage journey with vintage carriages, formal dining, and fares that run into the thousands rather than the tens of euros. It suits travellers who want that experience for its own sake, not a practical way to get from Venice to Paris. Everything else in this guide covers the ordinary, scheduled trains that get you there in a day or overnight, at a fraction of the cost.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is there a direct train from Venice to Paris?

No. Every route needs one change, most commonly at Milan Centrale on an all-Trenitalia Frecciarossa route, or at Turin Porta Susa if you take a Frecciarossa to Turin and continue on SNCF's TGV.

### How long does the train from Venice to Paris take?

About 10 hours 48 minutes on the fastest all-Trenitalia Frecciarossa connection. The TGV-via-Turin route usually takes 13 to 15 hours on weekdays, though its quickest weekend departure can reach Paris in around 11 hours.

### Which stations do Venice to Paris trains use?

Trains leave from Venice Santa Lucia, not Venezia Mestre, and arrive at Paris Gare de Lyon, not Gare du Nord. Depending on your route, you change at Milan Centrale or Milan Porta Garibaldi, or at Turin Porta Susa.

### Is there a sleeper train from Venice to Paris?

Not directly. The through Venice to Paris sleeper stopped running in 2020. A genuine overnight alternative exists: an afternoon TGV from Paris to Stuttgart connecting onto the ÖBB Nightjet sleeper to Venice.

### Is the Venice to Paris train route affected by engineering works in autumn 2026?

Yes, for a fixed window. Engineering work connecting the new Lyon-Turin base tunnel closes the Paris to Turin and Milan corridor from 12 September to 9 October 2026, confirmed directly by SNCF. Normal service resumes afterwards; if your dates fall inside that window, travel via Switzerland instead.
