[Stockholm](<https://everyrail.com/sweden/stockholm/>) to [Copenhagen](<https://everyrail.com/denmark/copenhagen/>) takes about five to six hours by direct train; when it is not offered, change at Malmö for the [Öresundståg](<https://everyrail.com/sweden/oresundstag/>) connection.

## At a glance

- Typical direct journey: about five to six hours
- Normal service pattern: direct SJ departures on some dates; otherwise change at Malmö C for Öresundståg
- Main stations: Stockholm Central to København H
- Cross-border leg: Öresundståg between Malmö C and Copenhagen

Direct departures and journey times vary by date. When a direct SJ service runs, it is the simplest option; otherwise, change at Malmö C for Öresundståg.

## Direct trains and the Malmö connection

SJ operates the direct Stockholm to Copenhagen service on some dates, with journeys taking about five to six hours. On other dates, travel via Malmö C and change to Öresundståg across the Øresund to Copenhagen.

The Malmö connection is a practical fallback rather than a complicated border transfer. Allow enough time to change trains, especially if you are travelling with luggage or have an onward booking. A single itinerary is easier to manage when it is available because its ticket conditions cover the complete journey.

## Stations in Stockholm and Copenhagen

Stockholm Central is the normal long-distance departure station. It is in the city centre and also connects with local services. If you are arriving from Stockholm Arlanda or another Swedish city, allow time to reach the correct platform.

København H, also called Copenhagen Central, is the main city-centre arrival. Öresundståg also serves Copenhagen Airport, Nørreport, Tårnby, Ørestad, and Østerport. Choose the stop that fits your plans: these stations serve different parts of the city.

For a non-direct journey, change at Malmö C; Malmö and Copenhagen are separate stops, so allow time to change trains.

## Tickets, fares, and reservations

There is no fixed fare for this route. The price depends on the date, passenger type, departure, class, and flexibility of the ticket. An advance fare can suit fixed plans, while a more flexible product may cost more but allow changes or cancellation under its conditions.

Reservation rules depend on the exact train and operator. A seat reservation, where offered, is separate from the travel ticket, and a rail pass may need a paid reservation or supplement on the selected service. Keep the passenger names, date, train number, class, and reservation details together.

## The Öresundståg leg

Öresundståg tickets must be valid before boarding; tickets cannot be bought on board. If you use a regional transport app, activate the ticket before the train's original departure time. A ticket to or from Denmark may also include local transport in zones 1, 3, and 4 for the stated traffic day, including S-trains, buses, the harbour bus, and the Metro. The product's own conditions determine what is included.

Öresundståg has no food or drink service, but electrical outlets are available. Travellers with a bicycle, pram, wheelchair, or heavy luggage should use the middle section with its low floors at platform height. Assistance should be arranged several hours in advance.

## Timetables and travel documents

Service and engineering work can change the journey for your date. Check your date-specific itinerary before leaving; it should show whether you have a direct train or Malmö change, the stations, and the connection. Carry the travel documents required for the international journey and keep your ticket available offline.

## When the train is a good choice

The train works well when you want a city-centre arrival and can use a five-to-six-hour journey to work or rest. A direct departure avoids a change and is usually the easiest choice. A Malmö itinerary is still sensible when its departure time fits better, but leave a margin for the connection. Compared with flying, rail avoids airport transfers at both ends; weigh the complete door-to-door journey, not time in the air alone.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long does the train from Stockholm to Copenhagen take?

A direct journey takes about five to six hours. A Malmö connection or engineering work can make the trip longer, so the exact time depends on your date and itinerary.

### Is there a direct train from Stockholm to Copenhagen?

Direct SJ departures are available on some dates. When a direct option is not listed, the normal alternative is to change at Malmö C and continue with Öresundståg.

### How often do trains run from Stockholm to Copenhagen?

There is no fixed daily frequency. Some dates have direct SJ departures; on others, travel via Malmö C and change to Öresundståg.

### Which stations should I use in Stockholm and Copenhagen?

Stockholm Central is the normal departure station and København H is the main city-centre arrival. Some Öresundståg itineraries use Copenhagen Airport, Nørreport, Tårnby, Ørestad, or Østerport instead.

### Do I need a reservation for the Stockholm to Copenhagen train?

Reservation rules depend on the exact train and fare. A seat reservation does not replace the travel ticket, and a rail pass may need a reservation or supplement on the selected service.

### Can I buy an Öresundståg ticket on the train?

No. Buy a valid Öresundståg ticket before boarding, and activate an app ticket before the original departure time. Some tickets to or from Denmark include local transport under their stated zones and validity.
