[Split](<https://everyrail.com/croatia/split/>) to [Zagreb](<https://everyrail.com/croatia/zagreb/>) is a direct train journey of about 8 hours, with no change. Until the timetable change on 12 December 2026 there is one daytime train a day: a morning departure at 07:54 from Monday to Saturday except public holidays, and a 14:10 tilting ICN train on Sundays and public holidays. An overnight train with couchettes and sleeping cars leaves on Sunday evenings from 4 October and arrives on Monday morning. You need a seat reservation on the daytime trains, and a bus is quicker and far more frequent if time matters most.

## You get one daytime train until the 12 December timetable change

[HŽPP](<https://everyrail.com/croatia/hzpp/>), Croatia's national passenger railway, runs all trains on this line. The 07:54 from Split reaches Zagreb Glavni kolodvor at 16:04, an 8 hour 10 minute journey with stops including Perković, Knin, Gospić and Karlovac. It does not run on Sundays and public holidays, but it does run on 1 November.

On Sundays and public holidays the daytime train is the 14:10, which arrives in Zagreb at 21:24. That is 7 hours 14 minutes, the fastest option on the line. It does not run on 1 November, when the 07:54 takes its place.

In summer there are more trains, but the extra morning and evening services end when the summer timetable finishes in early September. The current timetable runs until 12 December 2026, and HŽPP changes it several times a year, so check your date before you plan around a fixed arrival time.

## The overnight train saves a hotel night

The night train leaves Split at 21:03 and arrives at Zagreb Glavni kolodvor at 05:47, about 8 hours 44 minutes. From 4 October it leaves on Sunday evenings and arrives on Monday morning. It carries seats, couchettes and sleeping cars.

Couchette and sleeper places cost extra on top of your ticket. A place in a six-person couchette compartment costs €7, a three-berth sleeper €9, a two-berth sleeper €13 and a single-berth sleeper €25. Couchette places can be bought online, but sleeper berths are sold at ticket offices only.

## Which stations you use

You leave from Split station, on the waterfront next to the ferry port and the bus station. There are luggage lockers at Split station, useful if you are arriving early for the morning train or came off a ferry with heavy bags.

You arrive at Zagreb Glavni kolodvor, the city's main station, where there are luggage lockers too, handy if your onward connection is hours away.

## Tickets, reservations and passes

A normal ticket is priced by distance. Tickets bought online are 10% cheaper than tickets bought at the counter, so buy ahead if you can. There is no single flat fare to quote, so check the price for your date when you search.

A seat reservation is compulsory on the daytime trains, and it costs €1.06 on top of the ticket. Add it when you buy. If you already have a ticket, show it at a ticket office or to the conductor to add a reservation.

Interrail and Eurail passes are valid on HŽPP trains, and a pass day covers the ticket. Expect to reserve a seat on the daytime trains and to pay the reservation fee on top of your pass, and check the fee when you book, as it can differ for pass holders. The couchette or sleeper supplement for the night train is a third charge. Because a pass day is used for the whole journey, a single ticket may be cheaper if you are only taking this one train.

## Train or bus

The train is the more scenic way to cross Croatia, running through the Dalmatian hinterland and the Lika region, with more space than a coach. It is also slower. Buses take roughly 5 hours and leave many times a day, so choose the bus if speed or flexibility matters, and the train if you want the views and a comfortable seat.
