# Pompeii to Rome by train

Pompeii to Rome takes about 2 hours 30 minutes with one change in Naples: EAV to Napoli Piazza Garibaldi, then a Trenitalia Frecciarossa from Napoli Centrale.

![Ornate monument sculptures with a domed skyline in the distance.](<https://znmmduxdxnnnebgevjdu.supabase.co/storage/v1/object/public/blog-media/entity-featured/route-milan-to-rome.webp>)

Typical duration

About 2 hours 30 minutes, with one change in Naples.

Frequency

EAV trains run about every 30 minutes through the day; Trenitalia high-speed trains connect Naples and Rome throughout the day.

Changes

The usual journey changes in Naples: EAV to Napoli Piazza Garibaldi, then high-speed services from Napoli Centrale to Roma Termini.

Origin

[Pompeii](<https://everyrail.com/italy/pompeii/>)

Destination

[Rome](<https://everyrail.com/italy/rome/>)

Country

[Italy](<https://everyrail.com/italy/>)

The route from [Pompeii](<https://everyrail.com/italy/pompeii/>) to [Rome](<https://everyrail.com/italy/rome/>) starts at **Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri**, the EAV station beside the archaeological park. Take EAV to **Napoli Piazza Garibaldi**, use the interchange with Napoli Centrale, and continue on a [Trenitalia](<https://everyrail.com/italy/trenitalia/>) Frecciarossa to Roma Termini. Allow about 2 hours 30 minutes in total; a longer wait at [Naples](<https://everyrail.com/italy/naples/>) makes the journey longer.

EAV trains run from Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri to Napoli Piazza Garibaldi about every 30 minutes through the day and take about 35 minutes. Trenitalia high-speed trains connect Naples and Rome throughout the day.

## The route from the ruins

Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri and the mainline **Pompei** station are separate stops. Use Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri for the EAV journey from the ruins. At Napoli Piazza Garibaldi, follow the signs to Napoli Centrale and allow time to reach the long-distance platforms before your Rome train.

The EAV leg is a separate local journey, so buy and validate its ticket at the start of the trip. Book the Rome leg with Trenitalia for the selected departure. Frecciarossa is the fast long-distance option between Naples and Rome.

## Changing at Naples

Plan to change in Naples: EAV arrives at Napoli Piazza Garibaldi, while long-distance Trenitalia trains leave from Napoli Centrale. Leave enough time for the interchange and keep the two tickets together when planning the journey.

The **Pompei Link** connects mainline Pompei with a shuttle bus towards the archaeological park. The bus leaves from the square outside Pompei station; search for Pompei Scavi when buying the combined train and bus ticket.

## Trenitalia, Italo and passes

Trenitalia runs the high-speed Rome to Naples corridor. Italo links Rome and Naples in about one hour but does not serve Pompei. If you choose Italo, change in Naples and buy the Italo and EAV tickets separately.

For an ordinary Trenitalia journey, book the Rome leg for a specific departure. With Interrail, Frecciarossa and Frecciargento reservations are required and cost €13, paid separately from the pass. Interrail does not cover Italo or the Circumvesuviana, so the EAV leg needs a separate local ticket and an Italo journey needs its own ticket.

## Returning to Rome after Pompeii

For the return, take EAV from Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri to Napoli Piazza Garibaldi and continue from Napoli Centrale on the next suitable long-distance train. Keep a margin between the separate tickets and check the last Rome departure from Napoli Centrale before you leave the ruins.

## Frequently asked questions

### How do I get from Pompeii to Rome by train?

For the archaeological park, take EAV from Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri to Napoli Piazza Garibaldi, then continue from Napoli Centrale on a Trenitalia Frecciarossa to Roma Termini. Allow about 2 hours 30 minutes in total, including the change in Naples.

### Which Pompeii station should I use?

Use Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri for the EAV station beside the archaeological park. Mainline Pompei is a different station used by Trenitalia and the Pompei Link train and bus service.

### How often do trains run from Pompeii to Rome?

EAV trains leave Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri for Napoli Piazza Garibaldi about every 30 minutes through the day. Trenitalia high-speed trains connect Naples and Rome throughout the day.

### Can I use an Interrail Pass from Pompeii to Rome?

Interrail covers Trenitalia services in Italy, but reservations are required on Frecciarossa and Frecciargento, cost €13 and are separate from the pass. Interrail does not cover the Circumvesuviana, so buy a separate EAV ticket. It does not cover Italo either, so an Italo journey needs its own ticket.
