# Munich to Amsterdam by train

About 7 hours by ICE from München Hbf to Amsterdam Centraal: one direct train daily, others with one change, plus an overnight ÖBB Nightjet.

Origin

[Munich](<https://everyrail.com/germany/munich/>)

Destination

[Amsterdam](<https://everyrail.com/netherlands/amsterdam/>)

Main stations

München Hbf to Amsterdam-Centraal

Countries

[Germany](<https://everyrail.com/germany/>), [Netherlands](<https://everyrail.com/netherlands/>)

The daytime ICE from München Hbf to [Amsterdam](<https://everyrail.com/netherlands/amsterdam/>) Centraal takes about 7 hours, and one train a day runs through without a change.

## Direct ICE or one change

The direct ICE leaves München Hbf in the early afternoon and reaches Amsterdam Centraal in the evening, with stops including [Stuttgart](<https://everyrail.com/germany/stuttgart/>), [Frankfurt](<https://everyrail.com/germany/frankfurt/>) Airport, [Cologne](<https://everyrail.com/germany/cologne/>), Arnhem and Utrecht. If an afternoon start suits you, take it. You keep one seat all the way.

The other daytime ICEs leave München Hbf roughly every two hours and run to Duisburg, where you change to the ICE International for Amsterdam. The connection is short. These journeys take about as long as the direct train. From 9 to 30 October 2026, works close Duisburg to these trains, so you change at Düsseldorf or Cologne instead.

## Overnight on the ÖBB Nightjet

The Nightjet from Innsbruck calls at München Hbf late in the evening and reaches Amsterdam Centraal mid-morning, via Arnhem and Utrecht. It runs on many nights but not every night, so check your date, and takes about 11 hours. A seat, couchette or sleeper reservation is compulsory and comes with the Nightjet ticket.

On an Interrail or Eurail Pass you still pay a Nightjet reservation fee for your seat, couchette or bed. Pass places on each train are limited, so reserve as soon as your dates are fixed.

The Nightjet is about four hours slower than the ICE. In return you save a hotel night and get a full last day in [Munich](<https://everyrail.com/germany/munich/>).

## Tickets and fares

Second-class ICE tickets start from €38 one way. Supersparpreis and Sparpreis Europa are sold subject to availability, so the lowest prices go to early bookers. You choose between three fare types:

| Fare | Changes and refunds |
| --- | --- |
| Supersparpreis Europa | Fixed train, no changes or cancellations |
| Sparpreis Europa | Changes and cancellations for a fee |
| Flexpreis Europa | Free changes and cancellations until the day of travel |

Flexpreis Europa also includes a City-Ticket. It covers local buses, trams and metro on your day of departure in over 140 German cities.

A seat reservation on the ICE is optional for most of the year, but worth having on a trip of about 7 hours. From 25 June to 5 September 2027 it becomes compulsory for international ICE journeys.

On the Nightjet, one-way fares start from €35 for a seat, €55 for a couchette and €100 for a bed in a sleeper.

## Works on the direct ICE in autumn 2026

Three sets of works break up the direct train this autumn. On 3 October 2026 it terminates at Utrecht Centraal, so you finish on a connecting train to Amsterdam. From 4 to 8 November 2026 it starts at Stuttgart Hbf instead of Munich, and you reach Stuttgart on another train. From 10 to 16 November 2026 it runs via 's-Hertogenbosch instead of Arnhem and reaches Amsterdam about 25 minutes later.
