Main stations

Country

[Italy](<https://everyrail.com/italy/>)

Frecciarossa and Italo high-speed trains run direct from Milano Centrale to Napoli Centrale all day, taking about 4.5 to 5 hours.

## Frecciarossa or Italo

Two companies run this line. [Trenitalia](<https://everyrail.com/italy/trenitalia/>)'s Frecciarossa leaves Milano Centrale from early morning into the evening, often twice an hour or more at busy times. Italo runs its own direct trains on the same high-speed line through the day. You do not need to change on either.

Journey times are close. The quickest Frecciarossa takes about 4 hours 30 minutes, and Italo's fastest trains take just over 4 hours. Trains with more stops take about 5 hours. Pick on price and departure time.

## Fast trains and stopping trains

The fastest Frecciarossa runs non-stop from [Milan](<https://everyrail.com/italy/milan/>) to Roma Termini, skipping [Bologna](<https://everyrail.com/italy/bologna/>) and [Florence](<https://everyrail.com/italy/florence/>). Slower ones also call at Milano Rogoredo, Reggio Emilia AV, Bologna Centrale and Firenze Santa Maria Novella. If you are breaking the trip in Florence, choose a train that stops there. Not all of them do.

Italo trains stop in [Rome](<https://everyrail.com/italy/rome/>), at Roma Termini or Roma Tiburtina, and depending on the train also at Firenze Santa Maria Novella, Bologna Centrale and Reggio Emilia AV.

A slow daytime Intercity also runs direct, but it takes nearly 10 hours.

## Stations in Milan and Naples

Start at Milano Centrale. Both companies also use Milano Rogoredo in the south-east of the city, which only helps if you are staying nearby.

In [Naples](<https://everyrail.com/italy/naples/>), many trains call first at Napoli Afragola, a high-speed station north of the city. Stay on to Napoli Centrale, the main station in the city centre.

## Tickets and Interrail passes

Frecciarossa tickets come as Base, Economy and Super Economy fares. Base is the most flexible, with changes and refunds allowed. Economy allows changes. Super Economy has limited availability. Italo tickets start from €34.90 one way, with the low fares going to early bookers.

On an Interrail pass, take the Frecciarossa. The pass covers Trenitalia, but every Frecciarossa requires a seat reservation, which costs €13. Italo is not covered by the pass at all, so on Italo you need a normal ticket.

Timetables change with the new European timetable on 13 December 2026, so look at your exact train again if you are travelling after that date.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is there a direct train from Milan to Naples?

Yes. Frecciarossa and Italo high-speed trains run direct from Milano Centrale to Napoli Centrale throughout the day, with no change of train.

### How long is the train from Milan to Naples?

Most trains take about 4.5 to 5 hours. The fastest Frecciarossa takes about 4 hours 30 minutes and the fastest Italo just over 4 hours. Trains with more stops take nearer 5 hours.

### Is Frecciarossa or Italo better from Milan to Naples?

Neither is clearly faster, so compare the price and departure time. Choose Frecciarossa if you hold an Interrail pass, because the pass is not valid on Italo.

### Can I use an Interrail pass from Milan to Naples?

Yes, on Frecciarossa and other Trenitalia trains. Every Frecciarossa requires a seat reservation, which costs €13. Italo does not accept the pass.

### Is there a night train from Milan to Naples?

Yes, but not from Milano Centrale. Trenitalia's Intercity Notte between Turin and Salerno calls at Milano Porta Garibaldi in the late evening and reaches Napoli Centrale the next morning without a change. It does not run every night and needs a reservation. The daytime high-speed train is far quicker.

### Which station in Naples should I get off at?

Napoli Centrale, the main station in the city centre. Many trains stop first at Napoli Afragola, north of the city, which suits only travellers heading there.
