The fastest journey takes about 2 hours 39 minutes and a typical journey takes about 2 hours 50 minutes. Direct high-speed departures are available, but the number, times and stops depend on the date.

## Direct trains and operators

Renfe operates AVE, Avlo and other Larga Distancia services on the Málaga to Madrid corridor. iryo also runs high-speed trains between the two cities. Both connect central stations, so the train avoids the airport transfer that a flight would require.

A direct train is usually the simplest option for this journey. Direct departures normally operate, but service frequency is not fixed across dates. When booking, use the departure and arrival times, train number and any intermediate stops to choose the right service.

Renfe and iryo use different fare families. A lower headline fare can come with stricter change or refund conditions or fewer included extras, so the cheapest first price is not always the best fit.

## Stations and local connections

Málaga María Zambrano is the departure station and has local transport links. Allow time to find the departure board and platform when you arrive.

Puerta de Atocha (Almudena Grandes) is the Madrid arrival station. Plan around its 05:00 to 01:00 opening hours; metro, bus, taxi and Madrid Cercanías connections are available. The station also has facilities for passengers with reduced mobility.

Some Renfe AVE and Larga Distancia tickets include a free Combined Cercanías trip. Your entitlement and local journey depend on the ticket, so read the benefit attached to your booking before using it.

## Tickets, fares and choosing a train

Booking ahead can help you find lower Renfe fares. Discounts are available for children, young people, seniors and other eligible travellers. The fare depends on the date, train and conditions attached to the ticket.

iryo's four fare families are Inicial, Inicial Superior, Infinita and Infinita Bistró. They combine different levels of flexibility and onboard options. Each fare's inclusions determine whether an upgrade is useful.

When both operators have suitable departures, compare the complete ticket: total price, departure and arrival stations, seat or comfort options, luggage conditions and change or refund rules. A slightly later train can be better value when it includes the flexibility or allowance you need.

## Before you travel

Temporary speed restrictions can cause delays outside iryo's control. For Renfe bookings, use the train-status service. On the day, use the live status for your train and keep the train number and station names with your ticket.

At Málaga María Zambrano, follow the destination and departure time on the board before joining a queue. At Madrid Puerta de Atocha (Almudena Grandes), allow time to reach your metro, Cercanías, bus or taxi connection after leaving the long-distance platforms. Arrange reduced-mobility assistance through the current operator and station channels before travel if you need it.

For a return journey, use the exact station printed on the ticket. City searches can hide the difference between a long-distance station and a local stop.

## Train or flight

For most city-centre trips, a direct train is the straightforward choice. It keeps the journey on one service and avoids airport transfers. It is especially useful when a roughly three-hour ride and a central arrival suit your plans; consider the complete door-to-door time if you are also considering a flight.
