# Hamburg to Amsterdam by train

Hamburg to Amsterdam takes about 5h15 with one change at Osnabrück; a direct ICE runs four times a day from 2 October 2026.

Origin

[Hamburg](<https://everyrail.com/germany/hamburg/>)

Destination

[Amsterdam](<https://everyrail.com/netherlands/amsterdam/>)

Main stations

Hamburg Hbf to Amsterdam-Centraal

Countries

[Germany](<https://everyrail.com/germany/>), [Netherlands](<https://everyrail.com/netherlands/>)

[Hamburg](<https://everyrail.com/germany/hamburg/>) to [Amsterdam](<https://everyrail.com/netherlands/amsterdam/>) takes about 5h15 by train, changing once at Osnabrück Hbf. From 2 October 2026, four direct ICE trains a day also run, planned until at least the end of 2027.

## Journey time and changes

The standard journey leaves Hamburg Hbf on a [Deutsche Bahn](<https://everyrail.com/germany/deutsche-bahn/>) train to Osnabrück Hbf, where you change to the ICE to Amsterdam Centraal. Total time is about 5h15, though it varies by date. The onward leg from Hamburg can be an Intercity or a regional train, so check that the connection is protected on one ticket. Deutsche Bahn and NS International both sell tickets for this trip.

## Stations and the direct ICE

From 2 October 2026, four ICE trains a day run between [Berlin](<https://everyrail.com/germany/berlin/>), Hamburg and Amsterdam with no change. They exist because of long works on the Hannover to Berlin line, planned to last until the end of 2027.

Until 12 December 2026 these trains call at Hamburg-Bergedorf and Hamburg-Harburg, not Hamburg Hbf. Both have S-Bahn links to the city centre, so allow extra time to reach them. From 13 December 2026 the direct trains call at Hamburg Hbf and Bremen Hbf. Journeys with a change at Osnabrück always start at Hamburg Hbf. Check the station on your ticket before you travel.

## Tickets, reservations and bikes

Advance fares are listed from €33 one way, but the price you see depends on the date and availability. Supersparpreis Europa is the cheapest fare and cannot be changed or cancelled. Sparpreis Europa can be changed or cancelled for a fee up to the day before travel, so check the exact charge at booking.

A second-class seat reservation costs €5.50 per person one way. Outside the compulsory period it is optional, but worth having on a trip of this length. On international ICE trains, seat reservations are compulsory from 25 June to 5 September 2027. That covers the direct ICE and the ICE leg to or from Osnabrück. A first-class full-flex ticket includes the reservation.

NS International currently cannot sell bicycle tickets for journeys to, from or via Germany. If you are travelling with a bike, ask Deutsche Bahn how to book it.
