# Geneva to Zurich by train

Direct SBB IC1 trains leave Genève hourly for Zürich HB, calling at Lausanne and Bern, in just under 3 hours. No seat reservation needed.

Origin

[Geneva](<https://everyrail.com/switzerland/geneva/>)

Destination

[Zurich](<https://everyrail.com/switzerland/zurich/>)

Main stations

Genève to Zürich HB

Country

[Switzerland](<https://everyrail.com/switzerland/>)

Direct SBB IC1 trains run from Genève to Zürich HB every hour, taking just under 3 hours via Lausanne, Fribourg and Bern.

## The direct IC1

The IC1 is the train to take. It is the only direct service, it leaves once an hour through the day, and Genève ([Geneva](<https://everyrail.com/switzerland/geneva/>) Cornavin) to Zürich HB takes about 2 hours 53 minutes. Stops on the way are Lausanne, Fribourg/Freiburg and Bern.

Flying into Geneva? The IC1 begins at Genève-Aéroport, less than 10 minutes before Genève. Board at the airport station and skip the trip into town.

## Arriving in Zurich

Zürich HB is the stop for the city. The train does not end there. It continues to Zürich Airport (Zürich Flughafen), about 20 minutes further on, and then to St. Gallen. That makes it a direct link from Geneva to a flight out of [Zurich](<https://everyrail.com/switzerland/zurich/>).

## Connections with one change

The next direct train is an hour away, but a connection with one change takes about 3 hours, much the same as the direct train. You can ride the IR15 to Bern and change there for Zürich. The other way changes at Renens VD, just outside Lausanne, and runs via Neuchâtel and Biel/Bienne.

## Tickets and prices

Prices are in CHF. For flexibility, buy a standard point-to-point ticket. It is valid on any train on your chosen day, until 5am the next morning, and it is on sale until departure.

Supersaver tickets can be up to 50% cheaper. The catch: they are valid only on the train you booked, and if you miss it for your own reasons you have to buy again. Cancellation is possible only within 30 minutes of purchase, and only if you bought the ticket while logged in. Travelling to Zurich and back in a day? A Saver Day Pass may work out better. It covers a whole day of travel in Switzerland from CHF 52 in second class, or CHF 29 with a Half Fare Travelcard. You have to buy it in advance, and the earlier you buy, the better your chance of a low price.

If you live outside Switzerland, the Swiss Half Fare Card costs CHF 150 and cuts fares by up to 50% for a month. The Swiss Travel Pass covers the IC1 in full.

## Seat reservations

Not needed. The IC1, like most Swiss trains, has no compulsory reservation, so a valid ticket bought before boarding is all you need. A reserved seat costs CHF 5. Supersaver tickets never include one.

The pattern above applies to the 2026 timetable, which runs until 12 December 2026. Travelling after that? Look up your exact train.
