[Bologna](<https://everyrail.com/italy/bologna/>) to [Rome](<https://everyrail.com/italy/rome/>) is a straightforward journey on the Italian network. [Trenitalia](<https://everyrail.com/italy/trenitalia/>)'s Frecciarossa and Italo both run direct high-speed trains, roughly every 20 to 30 minutes through the day, covering the 303 km in as little as 1 hour 57 minutes on the fastest, non-stop departures.

## Bologna to Rome by train at a glance

| Detail | What to expect |
| --- | --- |
| Direct service | Yes, no change of train. Only the fastest departures run non-stop; others call at one or more stations |
| Fastest journey | About 1 hour 57 minutes |
| Typical journey | About 2 hours 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the train |
| Departure station | Bologna Centrale |
| Arrival station | Roma Termini, for both operators |
| Frequency | Roughly a departure every 20 to 30 minutes through the day |
| Fares | Italo's advance Smart fare starts from €19.90. Trenitalia runs a comparable tiered fare ladder |
| Distance | About 303 km |

## Trenitalia or Italo: how to choose

Both operators run modern high-speed trains on the same Bologna, [Florence](<https://everyrail.com/italy/florence/>), Rome mainline, so comfort is not really the deciding factor. Price and timing are. Book whichever has the better fare for your slot.

Neither publishes a single fixed price. Trenitalia's Frecciarossa sells through a tiered Base, Economy and Super Economy structure, and the cheapest advance fares are tied to one specific train and date, with no changes or refunds. Italo prices its entry Smart fare from €19.90 the same way: cheapest furthest out from departure, with Prima and Club Executive classes above it for more space and lounge access. Both climb steeply as the departure gets closer.

Book early if price matters more than flexibility.

Italian rail strikes (scioperi) are fairly common and usually affect only part of the day rather than shutting the corridor down. When one is called, operators publish a list of guaranteed trains in advance, so check the relevant operator's site if your travel date happens to land on one.

## Same station almost every time

Unlike [Venice](<https://everyrail.com/italy/venice/>), Paris or [Milan](<https://everyrail.com/italy/milan/>), this corridor rarely forces a station decision. Bologna Centrale is the only mainline station serving the city. In Rome, the great majority of Trenitalia and Italo departures on this route terminate at Roma Termini, in the city centre and within walking distance of most central hotels.

A small minority of Frecciarossa and Italo departures on this line continue past Rome to [Naples](<https://everyrail.com/italy/naples/>) or [Salerno](<https://everyrail.com/italy/salerno/>), and some of those call at Roma Tiburtina in the northeast of the city instead of, or as well as, Termini. Check the arrival station at booking if your trip continues past Rome; for an ordinary same-day Bologna to Rome ticket, Termini is what you get.

## Rail passes and reservations

An Interrail or Eurail pass covers Trenitalia's Frecciarossa on this route, but it does not cover Italo at all. Passholders still need a seat reservation on the Frecciarossa, a modest fixed fee on top of the pass rather than a full fare. Ordinary point-to-point tickets on either operator already include an assigned seat, so there is nothing extra to book if you are buying a normal ticket rather than travelling on a pass.

If you hold a pass, book Trenitalia by default. Choose Italo only when you are buying a ticket outright and its fare or timetable genuinely suits your plans better.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is there a direct train from Bologna to Rome?

Yes, with no need to change trains. Only the fastest departures run non-stop; other Frecciarossa and Italo trains call at one or more stations along the way, which is part of why journey times vary.

### How long does the train from Bologna to Rome take?

The fastest services take about 1 hour 57 minutes. Typical journeys run closer to 2 hours 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the train and how many extra stops it makes.

### Which Rome station do Bologna trains arrive at?

Roma Termini, for the great majority of Trenitalia and Italo trains on this route. Bologna Centrale is the departure station. A small number of services continuing past Rome to Naples or Salerno call at Roma Tiburtina instead, so check the arrival station shown at booking if your journey continues beyond Rome.

### Is Trenitalia or Italo cheaper for Bologna to Rome?

It depends on the date and how far ahead you book. Italo's advance Smart fare starts around €19.90, and Trenitalia runs a similar tiered structure. Compare both for your travel date rather than assuming either is always cheaper.

### Does an Interrail or Eurail pass cover this route?

It covers Trenitalia's Frecciarossa, with a separate seat reservation fee on top of the pass. It does not cover Italo, so pass holders should default to booking Trenitalia.

### How frequent are trains between Bologna and Rome?

Very. Combined, Trenitalia and Italo run roughly a departure every 20 to 30 minutes through most of the day.
