# Amsterdam to Munich by train

Amsterdam Centraal to München Hbf takes about 7 hours by ICE: one direct morning train, others with one change, plus an overnight ÖBB Nightjet.

Origin

[Amsterdam](<https://everyrail.com/netherlands/amsterdam/>)

Destination

[Munich](<https://everyrail.com/germany/munich/>)

Main stations

Amsterdam-Centraal to München Hbf

Countries

[Netherlands](<https://everyrail.com/netherlands/>), [Germany](<https://everyrail.com/germany/>)

[Amsterdam](<https://everyrail.com/netherlands/amsterdam/>) Centraal to München Hbf takes about 7 hours by ICE, with one direct train each morning and other departures needing one change.

## Direct ICE or one change

The direct ICE leaves Amsterdam Centraal in the morning and reaches München Hbf in the afternoon, with stops including Utrecht, Arnhem, [Cologne](<https://everyrail.com/germany/cologne/>), [Frankfurt](<https://everyrail.com/germany/frankfurt/>) Airport and [Stuttgart](<https://everyrail.com/germany/stuttgart/>). This is the train to aim for. You arrive with the rest of the day in [Munich](<https://everyrail.com/germany/munich/>) and no change on the way.

The other ICE International trains leave Amsterdam roughly every two hours for Düsseldorf. There you change to an ICE that runs through to München Hbf. The whole trip still takes about 7 hours.

## Overnight on the ÖBB Nightjet

The Nightjet leaves Amsterdam Centraal in the early evening, calls at Utrecht and Arnhem, and reaches München Hbf early the next morning. It runs on many nights but not every night, so check your date, and takes about 12 hours.

The train splits on the way. Its Innsbruck carriages stop at München Hbf, but the Vienna carriages call only at München Ost, before dawn. Make sure your booking shows München Hbf as the arrival station.

A seat, couchette or sleeper reservation is compulsory and comes with the Nightjet ticket. On an Interrail or Eurail Pass you still pay a Nightjet reservation fee for your seat, couchette or bed. Pass places on each train are limited, so reserve as soon as your dates are fixed.

## Tickets and fares

Second-class ICE tickets start from €38 one way. Supersparpreis and Sparpreis Europa are sold subject to availability, so the lowest prices go to early bookers. You choose between three fare types:

| Fare | Changes and refunds |
| --- | --- |
| Supersparpreis Europa | Fixed train, no changes or cancellations |
| Sparpreis Europa | Changes and cancellations for a fee |
| Flexpreis Europa | Free changes and cancellations until the day of travel |

Flexpreis Europa also includes a City-Ticket. It covers local buses, trams and metro on your arrival day in over 140 German cities.

A seat reservation on the ICE is optional for most of the year, but worth having on a trip of about 7 hours. From 25 June to 5 September 2027 it becomes compulsory for international ICE journeys.

On the Nightjet, one-way fares start from €35 for a seat, €55 for a couchette and €100 for a bed in a sleeper.

## Works on the direct ICE in autumn 2026

The direct train changes on a few dates this autumn. On 3 and 4 October 2026 it starts at Utrecht Centraal, so you take a train from Amsterdam to Utrecht first. From 4 to 8 November 2026 it terminates at Stuttgart Hbf, where you change for Munich. From 10 to 16 November 2026 it leaves Amsterdam Centraal 30 minutes earlier than usual and runs via Venlo, skipping Arnhem.
