Zermatt is a car-free village reached directly by train, with the station in the centre and drivers transferring at Täsch.

## Use Zermatt for a normal rail arrival

For an ordinary train journey, enter **Zermatt** as your destination. This is the arrival station for the car-free village and it stands in the centre. It is where you want to finish if you have luggage, ski gear or a hotel booking.

There is one naming trap. **Zermatt GGB** is the separate station for the Gornergrat Railway, close to the main station. Use it for the mountain train to Gornergrat, not for a normal arrival from elsewhere in Switzerland. Choose Zermatt unless the Gornergrat trip is the next part of your day.

Check the station name on both tickets if you are continuing uphill. The two stations are close, but the change is on foot and should not be treated as staying on the same train.

## Plan the final approach through Visp or Brig

Book the complete journey to Zermatt and let the timetable choose the interchange. Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn operates the final regional approach from Visp to Zermatt, with trains every half hour. Its network also runs through Brig, so some itineraries may bring you onto the regional railway there.

From Zurich Airport, allow about three and a half hours to Zermatt. From Geneva or Basel airports, allow about four hours. These are useful planning anchors, not promises for every departure, so check the exact connection before committing to a flight-to-train transfer.

Use the SBB or Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn timetable for the whole trip. Ending a search at Visp or Brig hides the final valley train and makes it harder to judge the connection margin. This matters after a flight or late in the day, when a missed connection has a greater effect on arrival time.

If the planner offers Visp and Brig on different itineraries, compare the complete journeys rather than choosing from a map. Confirm the interchange time and the final departure to Zermatt before paying.

## Take the Glacier Express when it suits the day

The Glacier Express runs between Zermatt and St. Moritz, with shorter sections also available. It is a planned scenic journey, not the default way to reach Zermatt from the wider Swiss network. Use regular connections when arrival time and flexibility matter more than the panoramic train.

Every Glacier Express passenger needs a valid ticket for the chosen route and class plus a compulsory seat reservation. A qualifying rail pass may cover the ticket portion, but it does not remove the reservation requirement. Do not mistake pass validity for a booked seat.

Choose the Glacier Express when the journey itself is the point and you can plan the day around it. Before booking, confirm that it runs on your date, that a seat is available and that the arrival time works with your onward plan.

## Drivers should stop at Täsch and transfer by train

Private cars may travel only as far as Täsch. The same restriction applies to electric cars, so park there and use the Zermatt Shuttle rather than planning to drive to the hotel. Täsch is the deliberate handover from road to rail.

The shuttle takes about 12 minutes. Trains run every 20 minutes from 05:55 to 21:55, followed by hourly evening service until about 00:30 or 01:00. Weekend service continues overnight. A return ticket currently costs CHF 17.20, but check the timetable and fare for your date before relying on them.

Swiss Travel Pass holders do not need a separate shuttle ticket. A Half Fare Travelcard or Swiss Half Fare Card gives a 50% discount rather than free travel. Children aged 6 to under 16 also receive 50% off, while children with a Junior Card and those under 6 travel free. Check each traveller's pass or discount before payment so you do not buy a duplicate or full-price ticket.

With bulky ski equipment or several bags, check the walk from Zermatt station to the hotel before choosing a parking and shuttle time. A late road arrival can still be straightforward, but only if the planned shuttle leaves enough time for the final village transfer.

## Plan the station-to-hotel transfer before arrival

Zermatt station is central and many places are within walking distance. For a less convenient address or heavy luggage, the village also has e-taxis and a free e-bus. Ask your hotel whether it offers a pickup before assuming that a short line on a map will be easy with bags.

The station has a ticket office, baggage check-in and reclaim, lockers in several sizes, and step-free access to the platforms. Check the current station details if you need a staffed service, a particular locker size or assistance. That is safer than building a tight arrival plan around an unchecked facility.

Treat a mountain railway or cable-car departure as another stage after arrival in the village. Reach Zermatt first, allow time to move between departure points and leave unnecessary bags before a mountain excursion.

## Book the complete journey, then check what changes

For a rail arrival, search all the way to Zermatt. Confirm the interchange time and final Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn departure, especially after a flight or late in the day.

Drivers need a different final check: confirm Täsch parking and the shuttle departure that fits the road arrival. Glacier Express passengers need both the right ticket and the compulsory reservation. Pass holders should confirm what their product covers before buying anything separately.

Make the Zermatt leg visible before you pay. It is where a wrong station, an unusably tight connection or a duplicate fare is most likely to show up.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long can I use a Zermatt Shuttle return ticket?

You can use a return ticket once in each direction within 30 days of the travel date chosen when you buy it. A one-way e-ticket is tied to the selected date, so choose the return option only when it matches your plan.

### Do small dogs need a ticket on the Zermatt Shuttle?

Small dogs up to 30 cm tall travel free when they are in a suitable pet carrier. Larger dogs need a half-price ticket, so check the size rule before you pass through the turnstile.

### Can I use a locker at Zermatt station for several days?

Yes. The standard locker rental period is 12 hours, and the maximum rental period is 72 hours. Choose a locker size that fits your bags rather than assuming a ski bag or large case will fit.

### When is the ticket counter at Zermatt station open?

The ticket and travelcard counter is open daily from 07:30 to 18:00. If your arrival falls outside those hours, make sure you can use a ticket machine or have your ticket ready before travel.
