Granada railway station is the arrival point for AVE high speed trains from Madrid, and the walk into the historic centre is longer than it looks on a map.

## Book Granada railway station, not just "Granada"

[Renfe](<https://everyrail.com/spain/renfe/>) operates the station, and the fastest link is the AVE service from Madrid Puerta de Atocha, which was extended to Granada once the Antequera to Granada high speed line opened. Direct AVE trains take around 3 hours 20 minutes, calling at Antequera-Santa Ana on the way. That is the anchor to plan around: if your incoming flight or connection lands late in Madrid, a 3 hour 20 minute train can still get you into Granada the same evening, but check the last realistic departure before you fix an arrival time.

If you are already on the Costa del Sol, compare Malaga as the shorter starting point instead of routing everything through Madrid. [Malaga to Granada](<https://everyrail.com/trains/malaga-to-granada/>) connections run via Antequera-Santa Ana and are usually quicker than backtracking through the capital.

## Do not assume every AVE fare is the same

Renfe sells this route across several fare classes, from a restricted Basico fare to a fully flexible Premium fare. The cheapest advance fare can be non-changeable, so if your onward plans in Granada are not fixed yet, a mid-tier fare with change rights is often worth the extra cost. Book as early as you can: AVE pricing on this route rises as the travel date gets closer, the same dynamic pricing pattern used across Renfe's high speed network.

If you are travelling with an Interrail or Eurail pass, the AVE service still needs a paid seat reservation. A pass alone does not board you onto this train.

## Plan the walk from the station

Granada railway station sits northwest of the historic centre, roughly a 25 to 30 minute walk from the Cathedral and Alhambra area, longer with luggage or in the summer heat. A taxi rank and city bus stops are outside the station, and either is the sensible choice if you are arriving in the evening or carrying bags uphill toward the Albaicín.

Do not book a very late AVE arrival if your accommodation needs a same-day check-in confirmation. Granada's steep, narrow streets in the old town make a tired, heavily loaded walk from the station a poor way to start the trip.

## Frequently asked questions

### How should I plan a day trip to Granada by train?

Choose a return that leaves enough time for the part of Granada you actually plan to visit, then work backwards to the station instead of treating the last train as the default.

### What should I do if I arrive with heavy luggage?

Choose the simplest final transfer for the luggage you have, even if it costs a little more, and agree the accommodation handover before you leave the station.

### How should a group organise its arrival in Granada?

Agree one accommodation address, meeting point and final-transfer plan before the train arrives, so one delayed traveller does not leave everyone improvising outside the station.

### What should I do if I have a timed event after arriving in Granada?

Treat the event time as the real deadline and choose a train that leaves room for the final transfer, luggage and a small disruption rather than aiming to arrive at the advertised start time.

### What should I keep accessible during the journey to Granada?

Keep the ticket details, accommodation address and any separate onward-booking reference together, so you can check the exact plan without relying on an unstable connection after arrival.
