# Rome to Pisa by Train

Direct trains run every day from Rome to Pisa, all operated by Trenitalia. The fastest direct service is the Frecciargento, which covers the route in around 2 hours and 21 minutes. Frecciabianca trains complete the same journey in under 3 hours, and Intercity trains arrive in just over 3 hours. Around 14 direct trains depart daily from Roma Termini, with advance tickets starting from EUR 9.90.

## Trenitalia Train Options from Rome to Pisa

Trenitalia runs four types of direct train between Rome and Pisa. Each type differs in speed, comfort, price, and departure times.

### Frecciargento

The Frecciargento is the fastest direct option between Rome and Pisa, completing the journey in approximately 2 hours and 21 minutes. One direct Frecciargento service operates each day, departing from Roma Termini at around 06:05. This early departure is aimed primarily at business travellers.

The Frecciargento takes the high-speed line northward toward Florence, then continues on the conventional line into Pisa Centrale. Advance tickets start from EUR 24.90. The train offers 1st and 2nd class seating, air conditioning, power outlets at every seat, a cafe car, and a complimentary drink and newspaper in 1st class.

### Frecciabianca

Five Frecciabianca trains run directly from Rome to Pisa each day, taking approximately 2 hours 53 minutes to 2 hours 56 minutes. These tilting trains use the coastal route northwest from Rome, passing through Grosseto and Livorno before reaching Pisa Centrale. All Frecciabianca services depart from Roma Termini.

The coastal route follows the Mediterranean seaboard, with partial sea views south of Civitavecchia and north of Grosseto. Passengers seated on the right side when boarding at Roma Termini will get the best views. Advance tickets start from EUR 19.90. Frecciabianca trains have 1st and 2nd class seating, air conditioning, power outlets, and 1st class perks including a complimentary drink and newspaper.

### Intercity

Two Intercity trains run directly from Rome to Pisa each day, departing from Roma Termini at around 09:57 and 15:57. The journey takes approximately 3 hours and 6 minutes. These trains follow the same coastal route as the Frecciabianca, calling at Roma Ostiense, Grosseto, and Livorno.

Intercity trains offer 1st and 2nd class seating and are the most affordable advance-booking option on the route. Super Economy tickets start from EUR 9.90 when booked ahead.

### Regionale Veloce

Six Regionale Veloce trains run directly from Rome to Pisa each day. The journey takes around 4 hours and 3 minutes. These services have no seat reservations or assigned seating. They are the most practical choice for last-minute travellers buying tickets at the station.

## Rome to Pisa Train Stations

Most direct trains to Pisa depart from Roma Termini, Rome’s central station and main transit hub with Metro and bus connections. The Frecciargento, Frecciabianca, and Regionale Veloce trains all use Roma Termini. Intercity trains depart from Roma Termini and additionally call at Roma Ostiense, a secondary station in the southwest of the city.

Pisa Centrale is the destination station. It sits approximately 1.4 miles (2.3 km) from the Campo dei Miracoli and the Leaning Tower. Bus number 1 runs from the station to the Campo dei Miracoli. Luggage storage is available at Pisa Centrale for day-trippers.

## Tickets and Fares for Rome to Pisa Trains

Trenitalia uses a tiered fare system on long-distance routes. The three main tiers are:

**Super Economy** is the cheapest tier – non-refundable and non-changeable. These fares are available in limited quantities, and early booking secures the lowest prices.

**Economy** fares sit in the middle tier with some booking flexibility and partial restrictions on changes and refunds.

**Base** fares are the most flexible option. Changes are permitted before departure (a fee may apply), and partial refunds are available on unused tickets.

Frecce trains (Frecciargento and Frecciabianca) open for booking up to four to six months in advance. Intercity trains open up to three months ahead. Booking early is the primary way to secure Super Economy allocations at the lowest prices.

## Rail Passes on the Rome to Pisa Route

Both Interrail and Eurail passes are valid for travel between Rome and Pisa. The Italy One Country Pass covers this domestic journey, as does any Eurail or Interrail Global Pass.

Seat reservations are compulsory on most direct services when travelling with a pass. Frecciargento and Frecciabianca trains require a reservation costing approximately EUR 13 per journey. Intercity trains require a reservation costing EUR 3 per journey. Regionale Veloce trains do not require a reservation and can be boarded freely with a valid pass.

For pass holders, Intercity trains offer the best value. At EUR 3, the reservation fee is around EUR 10 less than on Frecce trains, with only a modest increase in journey time compared to the Frecciabianca.

## Getting from Rome to Pisa via Florence

An indirect route via Florence gives far more departure options throughout the day. Trenitalia Frecciarossa trains cover Rome to Florence in approximately 1 hour 30 minutes from Roma Termini. Italo trains also serve this leg from Roma Ostiense to Firenze Santa Maria Novella in approximately 1 hour 45 minutes, with tickets from EUR 24.20.

From Firenze Santa Maria Novella, regional trains run to Pisa two to five times per hour on weekdays. The Florence to Pisa leg takes approximately 50 to 90 minutes. Total travel time via Florence, including connection time, is typically around 3 hours or more. With a smooth connection, this is broadly comparable to the Frecciabianca or Intercity direct times.

The approximately 72 daily train options shown in booking systems for the Rome to Pisa route include both direct services and indirect journeys via Florence. Direct Trenitalia trains account for around 14 departures per day.
