# Trains from Munich to Frankfurt (Main) by Train

Direct ICE trains run between Munich Hauptbahnhof and Frankfurt (Main) Hauptbahnhof several times an hour throughout the day, all operated by Deutsche Bahn. The fastest direct journey takes approximately 3 hours 8 minutes, with most services running in around 3 hours 15-20 minutes. Around 51 direct trains run daily. Advance tickets start from approximately EUR 17.99 under the Super Sparpreis fare. Both stations sit in city centres, making this one of Germany’s most practical intercity rail links.

## Direct ICE Trains on the Munich-Frankfurt Route

Deutsche Bahn operates all direct services between Munich and Frankfurt. The main train type is the ICE (Intercity Express), Germany’s high-speed rail service. Intercity (IC) trains also cover the route, alongside occasional Eurocity (EC) services. All direct trains depart from Munich Hbf and arrive at Frankfurt (Main) Hbf. The route covers approximately 304 km, linking Bavaria’s capital with Germany’s financial centre without requiring any change of train.

## Journey Time from Munich to Frankfurt (Main)

The fastest direct ICE trains complete the Munich-Frankfurt route in approximately 3 hours 8 minutes. The large majority of direct services run in 3 hours 15-20 minutes. A smaller number of ICE variants travel via a slightly longer routing and can take up to 3 hours 57 minutes – these are the exception. Indirect services with one or two changes are available from around 3 hours 17 minutes, but direct travel is usually the simpler and more reliable option.

## Train Frequency from Munich to Frankfurt (Main)

Approximately 75 trains per day travel between Munich and Frankfurt across all services. Around 51 of those run direct, with no change required. During the day, direct ICE trains depart Munich Hbf roughly every 30 minutes. The first ICE departures leave Munich shortly after 4:20 AM. Last direct trains run late into the evening, with at least one overnight ICE service. The density of departures throughout the day means flexibility is good: there is rarely a need to plan tightly around a single specific departure.

## Munich to Frankfurt (Main) Train Tickets and Fares

Deutsche Bahn offers three main ticket types for the Munich-Frankfurt route: Super Sparpreis, Sparpreis, and Flexpreis. All are available in 2nd class (2. Klasse) and 1st class (1. Klasse). Prices vary by date, departure time, and how far ahead you book.

### Super Sparpreis – Cheapest Advance Fares

The Super Sparpreis is Deutsche Bahn’s lowest advance-purchase fare. On the Munich-Frankfurt route, prices start from approximately EUR 17.99 when booked ahead of travel. These tickets are train-specific – you must travel on the exact booked service (Zugbindung). Super Sparpreis tickets cannot be refunded or changed after purchase. Deutsche Bahn opens bookings up to 12 months in advance, and the cheapest Super Sparpreis fares are limited in availability, so booking early gives the best chance of a low price.

### Sparpreis – Standard Advance Fares

Sparpreis is Deutsche Bahn’s standard advance-purchase fare, typically available from around EUR 29.99-66 depending on the date and remaining availability. These tickets are also train-specific. Unlike Super Sparpreis, a Sparpreis ticket can be refunded as a DB credit voucher – with a small fee deducted – up to the day before departure. From the day of departure, neither changes nor refunds apply. Sparpreis suits travellers with a set date who want partial protection against last-minute changes.

### Flexpreis – Full-Flexible Fares

The Flexpreis is Deutsche Bahn’s full-price, fully flexible fare. A Flexpreis ticket is valid on any ICE, IC, or EC service between Munich and Frankfurt on the day of travel, so there is no need to commit to a specific departure. Prices on this route run from approximately EUR 96-126+ depending on date. Flexpreis tickets are fully refundable. A seat reservation is not included but can be added for a small additional fee.

### 1st Class vs 2nd Class

All fare types are available in 2nd class and 1st class. Second-class ICE seating is comfortable, with air conditioning, power sockets at every seat, and good legroom. First class offers wider seats, a quieter environment, and a less crowded carriage. Standard 1st class Sparpreis and Super Sparpreis fares do not include access to DB Lounges at stations.

## Seat Reservations on Munich-Frankfurt ICE Trains

Seat reservations on Munich-Frankfurt trains are optional, not mandatory. You can board an ICE without a pre-booked seat and sit anywhere that is not reserved. To guarantee a specific seat, add a reservation for EUR 5.50 (2nd class) or EUR 6.90 (1st class) per journey. LED indicators above or on each seat show which are reserved and which are free. On busy travel days – Friday afternoons, Sunday evenings, and major German public holidays – adding a reservation is worth considering to secure your preferred seat.

## Rail Passes for Munich to Frankfurt (Main)

Interrail and Eurail passes are both valid on all Deutsche Bahn ICE, IC, and EC trains, including all direct Munich-Frankfurt services. Germany is one of the most pass-friendly countries in Europe. There are no mandatory reservation fees for pass holders and no quotas. In the vast majority of cases, a valid pass allows you to board any DB long-distance train without paying any additional booking fee. An optional seat reservation (EUR 5.50 / EUR 6.90) is available if you want a guaranteed seat.

Interrail passes are for European residents living outside Germany; Eurail passes are for non-European travellers. Both offer a Germany one-country pass with 3, 4, 6, or 8 travel days within a one-month period, in 1st or 2nd class. For a single Munich-Frankfurt trip, an advance Sparpreis or Super Sparpreis ticket usually works out cheaper than a pass. A pass provides better value when you plan several rail journeys within Germany over a longer trip.

## Booking Munich to Frankfurt (Main) Train Tickets

The widest range of fares is available through Deutsche Bahn directly, via bahn.de or the DB Navigator mobile app. DB Navigator is available for iOS and Android and allows booking, ticket storage, and real-time train information. International resellers – Rail Europe, Trainline, and Omio – also sell DB tickets for this route and may suit travellers combining Munich-Frankfurt with journeys in other countries.
