# Malmö to Berlin by Train

You can travel from Malmö to Berlin by train in two practical ways. The flexible daytime route runs from Malmö C to Copenhagen, Hamburg, and Berlin Hbf. The simpler option, when the dates work, is Snälltåget's direct night train from Malmö C to Berlin Hbf.

## The Short Answer

Malmö to Berlin is a long international train trip, but it is straightforward if you choose the right route for your date.

Most daytime journeys use three main legs. Start with the Öresundståg from Malmö C to Copenhagen. Continue from Copenhagen towards Hamburg with international services. Finish with a German long-distance train from Hamburg Hbf to Berlin Hbf.

The overnight alternative is much easier on the body. Snälltåget's 2026 timetable shows the southbound night train leaving Malmö C at 21:55 and reaching Berlin Hbf at 08:35. It does not run every day all year, so check the calendar before building your trip around it.

The best daytime route is Malmö C to Copenhagen, Copenhagen to Hamburg, and Hamburg to Berlin Hbf.

The first leg is the easy part. Öresundståg runs cross-border trains between southern Sweden and Copenhagen, and its 2026 timetable pages include Malmö-Copenhagen services. Current times are best checked in the booking search close to travel, especially if you are connecting to a long-distance train.

From Copenhagen, look for the international service towards Hamburg. DSB sells international train tickets online and through its main-station sales offices, including Copenhagen. DSB also warns that track work in Denmark and Germany can change itineraries, so do not rely on an old screenshot.

Hamburg is the main transfer point for Berlin. Deutsche Bahn's Germany-Sweden fare page describes several daily Hamburg-Malmö services and gives Hamburg-Malmö as about 5 hours 50 minutes. From Hamburg Hbf, Berlin Hbf is served by frequent German long-distance trains.

For a comfortable daytime trip, choose a connection with realistic transfer time in Copenhagen and Hamburg. If you are buying separate tickets, be more conservative with your margins. A missed connection is much easier to handle when the whole journey is on one through ticket.

## The Direct Night Train

Snälltåget's direct night train is the simplest Malmö-Berlin train when it runs.

The 2026 timetable shows this southbound pattern:

StopTimeMalmö C21:55København Syd22:32Hamburg Hbf05:06Berlin Hbf08:35Snälltåget says the timetable is preliminary and may change because of track maintenance. Treat those times as a planning guide and confirm the live time when you book.

The 2026 calendar is seasonal. Departures from Sweden are listed for many Mondays to Fridays and Sundays from 7 April to 1 July, daily on 5–8 July, daily but replaced by bus from 12–18 July, many Mondays to Fridays and Sundays from 20 July to 30 October, and Wednesdays to Fridays plus Sundays from 2 November to 11 December. There are also selected late-December and early-January departures. Snälltåget says the Berlin night train pauses after 7 January 2027 and resumes after Easter.

Choose the sleeper if it fits your date and you want to save a travel day. It also removes the need to manage daytime transfers through Copenhagen and Hamburg.

## Tickets And Booking

Book the daytime route by comparing a through ticket with separate-leg prices.

For daytime trains, start with Deutsche Bahn, DSB, or a reseller that can combine the cross-border legs. DB's Germany-Sweden saver fare page lists fares from EUR 42.99 on short routes such as Hamburg-Malmö, and from EUR 61.99 on longer routes such as Hamburg-Stockholm. Those are fare examples, not a guarantee for every Malmö-Berlin date or routing.

For the night train, book directly with Snälltåget if possible. Snälltåget lists seated tickets from SEK 399 and private-compartment options for selected dates. Prices vary by date, demand, comfort type, and ticket flexibility.

Use the exact station names when searching:

- Malmö C
- Copenhagen or København Syd, depending on the connection
- Hamburg Hbf
- Berlin Hbf

If you are travelling during holiday periods or the summer sleeper season, book earlier. The cheapest seats and compartments can disappear first.

## Interrail And Eurail Passes

Interrail and Eurail can work well on this route, but reservations matter.

Snälltåget says Interrail Global Passes are valid on its Berlin service, but passholders must buy a reservation through Snälltåget. Interrail also lists Snälltåget reservations as compulsory and says they can be booked up to six months ahead.

For daytime trips, check each leg in your pass planner before you travel. Reservation requirements vary by operator, season, and train type.

## Which Option To Choose

Choose the daytime route for flexibility and the night train for simplicity.

The daytime route gives you more control. You can choose an earlier start, build in a longer stop in Hamburg, or avoid a tight connection. It is usually the better choice if your travel date does not match Snälltåget's sleeper calendar.

The night train is better if you want the cleanest route. You board in Malmö in the evening and wake up in Germany. It is also a good fit if accommodation in Berlin is expensive on your arrival night.

Before booking either option, check three things:

- Your travel date against the Snälltåget calendar.
- Transfer margins in Copenhagen and Hamburg.
- Current track-work notices for Denmark and Germany.
