# Malmö to Amsterdam by Train

Malmö to Amsterdam by train is possible, but it is not a direct journey. The clearest route runs from Malmö C through Copenhagen and Hamburg before reaching Amsterdam Centraal.

Most travellers should treat it as a long international rail day. If you want an easier pace, use a stop in Hamburg or take the seasonal Snälltåget night train from Malmö to Hamburg when it fits your date.

## Malmö to Amsterdam by Train at a Glance

Malmö to Amsterdam has no direct train, so the practical choice is whether you want a long daytime trip or an overnight leg to Hamburg.

That makes it a real cross-border rail journey, not a simple city hop. Build in connection time and check the exact timetable for your travel date.

## The Best Daytime Route

The clearest daytime route is Malmö C to Copenhagen, Copenhagen to Hamburg, and Hamburg to Amsterdam Centraal.

### Malmö to Copenhagen

Start with the short cross-Øresund leg from Malmö C to Copenhagen. This is the easiest part of the journey, and it positions you for the long Denmark-Germany section.

Use Malmö C and København H or Copenhagen H when you search. Öresundståg is the normal regional service across the bridge, but seat tickets cannot be booked on Öresundståg after 4 June 2024.

### Copenhagen to Hamburg

The Copenhagen-Hamburg leg is the spine of the journey. DSB and Deutsche Bahn are the main places to check this section.

Do not cut this connection too fine. International trains through Denmark and northern Germany can be affected by works, crowded summer services or reservation rules. If the booking engine marks a train as reservation-required, treat that as part of the ticket plan, not as an optional extra.

### Hamburg to Amsterdam

From Hamburg Hbf, continue towards Amsterdam Centraal. Deutsche Bahn has regular connections to Amsterdam, and many Malmö-Amsterdam itineraries use Hamburg as the main transfer point.

Some routes involve one or more changes after Hamburg. That is normal for this journey. Choose a connection that gives you time to move platforms, buy food and recover if the Denmark-Germany leg is late.

## The Overnight Option via Hamburg

When Snälltåget runs, the Malmö-Hamburg night train can make the journey much easier.

Snälltåget's 2026 Berlin/Copenhagen/Stockholm night train stops at Malmö C and Hamburg Hbf. Its preliminary Sweden-to-Germany timetable lists Malmö C at 21:55 and Hamburg Hbf at 05:06. From Hamburg, you can continue to Amsterdam by daytime train.

This option works best if the night train runs on your date and you are comfortable with an early arrival in Hamburg. Snälltåget says its 2026 Berlin route bookings are open until 12 December 2026, with the service pausing after early January and resuming after Easter.

Bring the right ID for the overnight route. Snälltåget says passengers on the Berlin-Malmö night train need a passport with an MRZ code or an EU/EEA national ID card that meets its stated requirements.

## Journey Time and Ticket Prices

The fastest checked train examples are around 11.5 to 12 hours, but many practical itineraries take closer to 15 hours or more.

That difference matters when you choose tickets. A very fast itinerary may rely on tight changes. A slightly slower plan can be calmer, especially if you are travelling with luggage or on separate tickets.

Fare examples vary widely. Reseller snippets checked in May 2026 showed starting examples from around EUR 57 or US$71.50, while other route estimates were much higher. Treat those as starting examples, not a promise for your date.

Book early if your dates are fixed. Cross-border fares can rise as cheaper quota seats sell out, and summer trains can be busy.

## Where to Book Tickets

It is usually easier to search Malmö to Amsterdam in sections than to force one perfect through ticket.

Separate tickets can reduce your protection if a delay on one train causes you to miss the next separately booked train.

## Interrail and Eurail Passes

An Interrail or Eurail Global Pass can work for Malmö to Amsterdam, but it does not remove the need to check reservations.

The route crosses countries covered by global passes. The practical issue is seat availability and reservation rules on the trains you choose. Eurail explains that reservations are not automatically included for every pass journey, and DSB says many international, high-speed and night-train connections need reservations when marked.

For passholders, check these before you commit to hotels:

- The Copenhagen-Hamburg train you plan to use.
- Any Hamburg-Amsterdam long-distance train that is marked reservation-required.
- The Snälltåget night train, if you use the overnight option.

A pass is most attractive if Malmö-Amsterdam is part of a longer European rail trip. For a single journey, compare pass-day value against point-to-point tickets.

## Train, Bus, or Flight

The train is the best fit if you want a low-flight journey between city centres.

Direct bus services between Malmö and Amsterdam appear in search results. A bus is still a long ride, and it does not give you the option of breaking the trip in Copenhagen or Hamburg.

Flying is faster in the air, but the route still involves airport transfers and security time. If your goal is to avoid flying, the rail route is completely workable as long as you respect the connection times.

## Practical Tips Before Booking

Use the exact station names in booking engines: Malmö C, København H, Hamburg Hbf and Amsterdam Centraal.

Check the same date in more than one place. A reseller can be useful for comparison, but DSB, Deutsche Bahn and Snälltåget are better for confirming the exact train, reservation rule and operator detail.

Avoid very tight connections in Hamburg. This is the main hinge of the route, and a missed connection here can turn a long day into a much longer one.

Re-check the timetable a few days before departure. Cross-border rail routes can change because of engineering work, and the Malmö-Amsterdam trip depends on several different rail networks.
