# Coimbra to Lisbon by Train

Coimbra to Lisbon by train is a straightforward direct journey on CP, Portugal’s national rail operator. Most travellers depart from Coimbra-B and arrive at Lisboa Oriente or Lisboa Santa Apolónia, travelling by Alfa Pendular or Intercidades.

## Direct Trains Run Every Day

CP operates direct long-distance trains between Coimbra-B and Lisbon on the main north-south rail corridor. The two services to know are Alfa Pendular and Intercidades. Both are direct, both have reserved seats, and both connect Coimbra-B with Lisboa Oriente and Lisboa Santa Apolónia.

Alfa Pendular is the premium option. It is the faster of the two and carries Comfort and Tourist classes, free Wi-Fi, power sockets, and an onboard bar and cafeteria. It reaches a maximum speed of 220 km/h.

Intercidades is the standard long-distance service. It offers first and second class, reserved seats, Wi-Fi, toilets, and a bar carriage. The standard second-class fare is lower than Alfa Pendular Tourist on the same route.

For most travellers, Intercidades is the sensible default. Choose Alfa Pendular when you want the fastest ride or prefer the onboard comfort.

## Coimbra-B Is the Station for Long-Distance Trains

Use Coimbra-B for all Alfa Pendular and Intercidades services to Lisbon.

Coimbra has more than one station, and this is the detail that catches travellers out. Coimbra-B is the main long-distance station. CP’s urban Coimbra services connect at Coimbra-B with long-distance AP, IC, and InterRegional trains, and the station also interfaces with SMTUC bus and Metro Mondego services.

If you are staying in central Coimbra, allow time to reach Coimbra-B before your departure. A local train, taxi, or bus can cover the short distance. Do not assume that “Coimbra” and “Coimbra-B” are the same stop in the booking system.

## Choosing Your Lisbon Arrival Station

In Lisbon, the two most practical arrival stations are Lisboa Oriente and Lisboa Santa Apolónia.

If you have a flight from Lisbon Airport, Lisboa Oriente is normally the more convenient rail arrival because it connects directly with the metro Red Line.

## Journey Times on the Coimbra–Lisbon Route

The fastest direct services on this route are comfortably under two hours. Alfa Pendular is typically the quickest option. Intercidades is close enough in journey time for most travellers, particularly when the fare or departure time is a better fit.

Always check CP’s timetable search for your specific travel date. Timetables can change around public holidays, engineering works, and late-evening departures.

## Standard 2026 Fares

CP’s 2026 standard adult fares for the Lisboa Santa Apolónia or Lisboa Oriente to Coimbra-B route pair are set out below. The same fares apply when travelling from Coimbra to Lisbon.

TrainClass2026 standard fareIntercidades2nd classEUR 22.20Intercidades1st classEUR 28.05Alfa PendularTouristEUR 27.10Alfa PendularComfortEUR 38.50These are standard fares valid from 1 January 2026. Availability at these prices depends on the train and booking channel.

## Advance Promo Fares Can Cut the Price Significantly

CP sells Promo tickets on Alfa Pendular and Intercidades when promotional seats are available. Buying 5 to 7 days before travel can bring a discount of up to 56%. Buying 8 or more days ahead can bring a discount of up to 65%.

Promo tickets are limited in number. They are exchangeable under CP’s Promo conditions but are not refundable. CP’s own Promo reference prices list Intercidades from Lisbon to Coimbra in second class from EUR 8.50, but those seats are limited and should be treated as an advance-deal example rather than the standard walk-up fare.

If your travel date is fixed, it is worth checking CP early to catch promotional availability.

## Interrail and Eurail Pass Holders Still Need a Reservation

Eurail Global Pass and Eurail One Country Portugal Pass are valid on regular CP trains in Portugal. However, CP states that Alfa Pendular, Intercidades, and Celta trains all require a paid compulsory seat reservation before boarding. A pass alone is not enough to board.

For European residents travelling with Interrail, check the current Interrail reservation guidance alongside CP’s rules. Domestic trains in Portugal can require reservation steps that differ from other European networks.

If Coimbra to Lisbon is your only train journey, a standard CP ticket is often simpler than combining a pass day with a separate reservation fee. A pass makes more sense when this trip is part of a longer rail itinerary through Portugal or Europe.

## Train Versus Bus for This Route

The direct CP train is usually the cleaner choice for Coimbra to Lisbon. It arrives into Lisbon’s rail and metro network, journey times are competitive, and both Alfa Pendular and Intercidades offer reserved seats and onboard facilities.

A bus can be worth comparing if the fare is significantly lower, if the bus station is closer to your starting point, or if train times do not fit your schedule. For most travellers, the direct train gives the best combination of speed, comfort, and city-centre access.

When comparing options, factor in the full door-to-door journey. A lower headline fare matters less if it adds a long transfer at one end.

## Practical Tips Before You Book

Book through CP first. CP is the operator and the official source for timetables, fares, and seat availability.

Decide on your Lisbon arrival station before you pay. Oriente suits airport connections and modern transport links. Santa Apolónia is often better for older central Lisbon.

Confirm that your ticket departs from Coimbra-B, not a different Coimbra stop. If you are in central Coimbra, leave enough time to reach Coimbra-B.

Buy earlier if you want a Promo fare. If flexibility matters more than price, read CP’s exchange and refund conditions carefully before choosing the lowest-priced ticket.
