No trains run between Siracusa and Catania or Messina from 1 October 2026 to 31 January 2027. Rail works have closed the line, and replacement buses leave from a stop on Via Onorevole Giuseppe Rubino, not from the station forecourt.

## Which station to use

Use Siracusa. It is the only station for the city centre and Ortigia, which lies south-east of it across the bridges to the island. The station has a ticket office, waiting areas, toilets, a bar, a newsstand, a tobacconist, bike rental and a bus stop. There are no lifts, but the route to platforms 1 to 6 is level or ramped, and travellers who need help boarding should request assistance at least 12 hours before the train.

## Trains to Catania are now buses

Between Bicocca, near Catania, and Siracusa the line is closed for infrastructure works until 31 January 2027. Regional trains on it are replaced by buses. Long-distance trains are changed, cancelled or replaced by bus on the same stretch, so a long journey to Syracuse may end on a bus.

Buses call at Priolo Melilli, Augusta and Lentini on the way to Catania, though not every bus makes every stop. Most take about two hours to Catania Centrale, and a few are faster. Some also call at Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa, the airport station. Board at the stop on Via Onorevole Giuseppe Rubino. At most other stations on the line the buses leave from the forecourt, but not here.

## Regional trains towards Noto and Modica

[Trenitalia](<https://everyrail.com/italy/trenitalia/>) regional trains run south-west from Siracusa through Avola and Noto, and on to Rosolini, Modica, Ragusa and Gela. Departures are at 05:29, 13:30, 14:45, 15:40, 17:15, 17:33 (not Saturdays), 17:39 (Saturdays only) and 20:33, and none run on Sundays or public holidays. The timetable runs to 12 December 2026. The 14:45 reaches Noto at 15:22, Modica at 16:32 and Gela at 18:08, and the 05:29 reaches Modica at 07:19.

There is no scheduled departure between 05:29 and 13:30, so a day trip to Noto means the 05:29 or a late start.

## From the station to Ortigia

City bus line 105, run by SAIS Autolinee, goes to Ortigia. Board it at Piazzale Marconi or at its start on Corso Umberto I, at Villini del Foro Siracusano. It runs about every 20 to 30 minutes, until 23:00 Monday to Thursday and until 02:00 on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, and it also passes the Neapolis area on Viale Teocrito and Corso Gelone. The 105 is a trial service, and routes and times may change when a new bus contract starts in 2027.

A single ticket costs €1.20, a 90-minute ticket €1.50 and a day ticket €3. Line 105 tickets are sold by SAIS Autolinee, on its website and app and by authorised retailers, not by Trenitalia.

## Rail passes and reservations

An Interrail pass covers most Trenitalia regional trains, including the Noto and Modica line, with no reservation. Intercity trains need a €3 reservation as of October 2026, which you must hold before boarding. Reservations are not included in the price of a pass, and Intercity services to Siracusa are changed or replaced by bus until 31 January 2027.
