# Train stations in Genoa

Genova Piazza Principe is Genoa's main station; Brignole is one metro stop from De Ferrari. Italo calls at both.

Genoa has three main railway stations, and two of them matter to most visitors. Genova Piazza Principe is the main station, just west of the old city. Genova Brignole is the eastern station, one metro stop from Piazza De Ferrari and the historic centre. Genova Sampierdarena is farther west.

## Choosing your Genoa station

Genova Piazza Principe is where most long-distance arrivals end up, and it is the simplest if you are carrying luggage and changing to the metro, because a covered tunnel links the platforms and the metro station. De Ferrari is four metro stops away. Genova Brignole is the better base if you are staying east of the centre, and De Ferrari is a single stop from there. Both stations are about 1 to 1.5 km in a straight line from De Ferrari, but this is a hilly, tangled city and the metro is faster than walking.

[Trenitalia](<https://everyrail.com/italy/trenitalia/>) serves all three stations. Italo stops at Principe and Brignole, with two daily services linking Genoa with Milan, Rome and Naples. Italo does not call at Sampierdarena.

Since 5 October 2026, engineering works between Brignole and Principe mean some Turin and Milan regional services start or end at Brignole instead of Principe. Trenitalia has published no end date.

## From the station to Piazza De Ferrari

Genoa has a single metro line. From Principe, ride towards Brignole for four stops (Darsena, San Giorgio, Sarzano/Sant'Agostino, then De Ferrari). From Brignole, ride towards Brin for one stop to De Ferrari. The De Ferrari exit leads towards Palazzo Ducale and the old town. Brignole's metro station has lifts and escalators, which helps with a suitcase.

AMT currently runs the metro until 21:00 from Monday to Friday and on Sundays and public holidays, and until midnight on Saturdays, so for a late arrival plan on a bus or taxi instead. Hours can change, so check AMT's notice before you travel.

An AMT ticket costs €2 for 110 minutes on buses and the metro. The integrated AMT-Trenitalia ticket costs €2.20 for 110 minutes and also covers Trenitalia trains within the Genoa urban area, from Nervi to Voltri and from Acquasanta to Pontedecimo. A five-hour ticket costs €5. Fares are current for autumn 2026. Buy through AMT's app or at its machines and keep the ticket for the whole journey.

Sampierdarena is not on the metro. Continue by regional train to Principe or Brignole, or by AMT bus, and use the integrated ticket if you take the train.

## Rail passes and reservations

An Interrail Pass covers Trenitalia Regional, Intercity, Frecciarossa, Frecciargento and Frecciabianca trains. Regional trains need no reservation. Frecce and Intercity trains need a paid reservation: as of October 2026 it costs €13 on Frecciarossa and Frecciargento, €10 on Frecciabianca and €3 on Intercity, in either class. Italo is not included in the Pass, so Italo journeys from Principe or Brignole need a separate ticket. Genoa's metro and buses are outside the Pass too.

## Planning journeys from Genoa

Most regional and Intercity trains from Genova Brignole and Genova Piazza Principe towards La Spezia Centrale call at Levanto and at Monterosso, the first of the five Cinque Terre villages, and a few regional trains stop at all five. On the others, change at Levanto or Monterosso for the local trains to Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore.
