Würzburg Hbf is the station for the old town and for almost every train in the city, from ICE services to Frankfurt, Nuremberg, Munich and Hamburg to regional trains in every direction. Würzburg Süd and Würzburg-Zell are small regional stops.

## Trains from Würzburg Hbf

ICE trains leave Würzburg Hbf about every 30 minutes towards Nuremberg and about hourly to Frankfurt (Main) Hbf and to Hamburg Hbf. A few Nightjet night trains call as well. Times are for the timetable to 12 December 2026.

Frankfurt (Main) Hbf takes about 1 hour 10 minutes via Aschaffenburg, and some of these ICE trains go on to Cologne and Dortmund. Nürnberg Hbf takes about 55 minutes. München Hbf takes about 2 hours 10 minutes via Nuremberg and Ingolstadt. Hamburg Hbf takes about 3 hours 30 minutes via Fulda, Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe, Göttingen and Hannover. There is no through train to Berlin. For Stuttgart, take the RE 8, run by Arverio, which leaves about hourly and takes about 2 hours 20 minutes via Lauda and Heilbronn.

ÖBB Nightjet trains call at Würzburg Hbf in the small hours on most nights. Trains towards Munich, Salzburg, Vienna and Innsbruck leave at about 01:25 to 01:40, and trains towards Kassel, Hannover, Hamburg and Amsterdam at about 02:30 to 03:00.

## Works until 12 December 2026

From 30 October to 12 December 2026, building work between Nuremberg and Munich changes the ICE timetable. The ICE trains that normally run to Munich via Nuremberg end at Nürnberg Hbf, but a direct ICE to München Hbf via Augsburg still leaves about every two hours and takes about 2 hours 35 minutes.

From 9 November to 12 December 2026 the line between Gemünden and Aschaffenburg is closed. ICE trains between Würzburg and Frankfurt are diverted and take about 45 minutes longer, and between Gemünden and Aschaffenburg the RE 54, RE 55 and RB 79 are replaced by hourly buses: express buses that stop only at Lohr, and buses that call at every station.

## Regional trains and Rothenburg ob der Tauber

The RE 10 runs to Nürnberg Hbf about hourly in about 1 hour 15 minutes, the RB 53 to Schweinfurt and Bamberg, and the RB 85 to Lauda and Osterburken. All three are DB Regio trains.

The RE 80, run by Arverio, leaves about hourly for Steinach (bei Rothenburg ob der Tauber), Ansbach and Treuchtlingen, and some trains go on to Munich. Steinach takes about 40 minutes. This is the day trip to Rothenburg ob der Tauber: change at Steinach for the RB 82, a DB Regio train that takes 15 minutes to the town. The last RB 82 leaves Rothenburg ob der Tauber at 23:05 and connects with the last RE 80 to Würzburg Hbf at 23:33, which arrives at 00:17.

## From the station to the old town

The Residenz is about a 20-minute walk from the station. For a ride, trams 4 and 5 both call at the Hauptbahnhof stop and run through the centre, every 10 minutes in the daytime from Monday to Saturday. Get off at Dom, two stops from the station, for the cathedral and the Residenz, or at Rathaus for the Marktplatz and the Alte Mainbrücke. The Tourist Information is in the Falkenhaus on the Marktplatz. The Festung Marienberg is about 20 minutes on foot from the Alte Mainbrücke.

Trams 1 to 3 are not running, even though older signs and guides still list them. Until early November 2026 the Kulturlinie 9 bus runs every 30 minutes from 09:30 to 18:00 and calls at the Hauptbahnhof ZOB, the Residenz and the Festung Marienberg.

## Tickets and the Deutschlandticket

City tickets from the WVV cover the city of Würzburg, Höchberg and Gerbrunn. A single costs €3.60, a short hop of up to four stops costs €1.80 (enough for Dom), and a day ticket costs €6.40 for one person or €11.70 for up to five. Buy them from the driver, at the machines at stops or in the WVVmobil app (prices of 1 August 2026).

The Deutschlandticket costs €63 a month. It covers regional trains, trams and local buses, so it works on trams 4 and 5, the RE 80 to Steinach and the RB 82. It is not valid on ICE, IC or EC trains. The WVV sells it digitally in the WVVmobil app.

## Würzburg Süd and Würzburg-Zell

Würzburg Süd is the next stop after Würzburg Hbf on the RE 80, RB 80 and RB 85, about 3 minutes away by train. It is a commuter stop, so use Würzburg Hbf for the sights.

Würzburg-Zell is on the line towards Karlstadt and Gemünden, about 5 minutes from Würzburg Hbf on the RB 53 and RB 79, with some RE 54 and RE 55 trains to Aschaffenburg and Frankfurt. From 9 November to 12 December 2026 the RB 79, RE 54 and RE 55 are replaced by buses between Gemünden and Aschaffenburg.

## Rail passes and reservations

As of October 2026, regional trains (RE and RB) need no reservation with an Interrail Pass. A seat reservation on ICE and IC trains is optional and costs €5.50 in second class or €6.90 in first. ÖBB Nightjet trains need a paid reservation, priced by route and date. To Vienna, Innsbruck or Amsterdam you need a Global Pass, because a One Country Pass for Germany does not cover the journey into Austria or the Netherlands.
