Toulouse has no high-speed line south of Bordeaux, so the Paris journey still takes over four hours by direct train.

## Getting to Toulouse from Paris

Toulouse is one of the few major French regional capitals still waiting on a full high-speed line. The LGV network runs out around Bordeaux, so TGV inOui services from Paris Montparnasse cover the rest on classic track, and the journey shows it: around 4 hours 30 minutes on the fastest trains, stretching toward 5 hours 30 minutes on services with more stops. Roughly a dozen direct trains run each day between Paris and Toulouse, split between TGV inOui and the lower-cost OUIGO, with no changes needed on the direct services. If the schedule matters more than the fare, book TGV inOui and check the exact journey time on your chosen departure rather than assuming the fastest published time. If the fare matters more, OUIGO covers the same route for less, with the same lack of flexibility that comes with every OUIGO ticket. A new high-speed line between Bordeaux and Toulouse is planned, but it is not expected before the early 2030s, so treat today's four-and-a-half-hour floor as the real number for the next several years, not a temporary inconvenience.

## Regional connections from Toulouse

Toulouse-Matabiau is the interchange for the southwest, and the routes out are a mix of fast and genuinely slow. Bordeaux, despite being the other major city in the southwest, takes around 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes by Intercités and TER, because that corridor also lacks a high-speed line. Montpellier, across to the Mediterranean coast, takes around 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes, with roughly 19 trains a day covering the route on a mix of TGV inOui, Intercités and TER. Carcassonne is the easy one: around 45 minutes on the fastest trains, closer to an hour on stopping services, with over 30 departures a day, enough that you can turn up without checking a timetable first and still find something within the hour. If your plan includes Carcassonne as a day trip, this is the leg to build it around.

## Toulouse-Matabiau station and the walk into town

Matabiau sits north of the centre, close enough to walk but far enough that most travellers with luggage will not want to. Place du Capitole, the square at the heart of Toulouse, is around 15 to 20 minutes on foot along Rue de Bayard and Rue de Remusat. Metro line A runs from Marengo-SNCF, next to the station, to Capitole in under 15 minutes with trains roughly every few minutes through the day, which is the faster and easier option if you are carrying bags or arriving in summer heat. One thing worth knowing before you travel: the underground passage linking the train station directly to the Matabiau metro platform is closed for works through mid-2026, so check current signage or the station layout on arrival rather than assuming the direct link is open. It adds a short walk at street level, not a major detour, but it catches travellers who last passed through before the closure started.

## Which ticket and which train to book

Toulouse has a single main station, so there is no station-choice decision the way there is in cities with multiple termini. The real decision is the same one that applies on most French long routes: TGV inOui for flexibility and a guaranteed Montparnasse departure, OUIGO for the lower fare with a non-changeable ticket. Given how long the Paris to Toulouse journey already runs, a delayed or missed OUIGO train is a bigger loss of time than on a shorter route, so weigh that against the fare saving before booking the cheaper option. For the Bordeaux, Montpellier and Carcassonne legs, book through SNCF Connect. Reservations are not compulsory on the regional TER services, but they are required on Intercités and TGV inOui workings that share those corridors, so check the ticket type before assuming you can simply board.

## Frequently asked questions

### Should I use SNCF to check a Toulouse ticket?

Use the official operator timetable and conditions for the exact service. Check every leg and ticket flexibility before paying.

### Should I choose the shortest connection to Toulouse?

Choose it only when the connection is protected and practical. More margin is normally better when an earlier train, coach or flight could be late.

### Can I treat the airport transfer as part of the train ticket?

Plan the airport transfer separately unless the confirmed itinerary explicitly includes it. Leave time for baggage, delays and the move between airport transport and rail.

### Can a rail pass replace a Toulouse ticket?

A pass can cover eligible journeys, but check the selected train and any reservation condition before travel day.

### Should I buy separate tickets for a Toulouse journey?

They can work when you allow a generous connection margin. Read the later ticket conditions first because they may not cover an earlier delay.
