Marseille-Saint-Charles is the station to book for almost every train trip; use Blancarde or Vitrolles only for a specific connection.

## Book Saint-Charles for central Marseille

Marseille-Saint-Charles is the main station and the right choice for almost every visitor. Booking sites may show Marseille Saint-Charles, Marseille St Charles or Gare de Marseille-Saint-Charles. All three names point to the station on Square Narvik, above the grand staircase leading towards the city centre.

Read the complete station name before paying. A result labelled only "Marseille" can hide a local stop, while most long-distance trains and many regional services use Saint-Charles. The station printed on the ticket is more reliable than a city-level search result.

## Choose Blancarde only when the train names it

Marseille-Blancarde is a secondary station east of the centre. Regional trains use it for services towards places such as Aubagne, Toulon and Hyères, and local trains connect it with Saint-Charles. It does not put you in the same place as Saint-Charles.

Some direct overnight Intercités trains from Paris Austerlitz are the important exception. They arrive at Marseille-Blancarde. Do not reject that result as an error if the ticket clearly names Blancarde, but plan the onward trip from there rather than assuming you will arrive above the city centre.

Other Marseille stops mainly serve nearby neighbourhoods. Choose one only when your accommodation is genuinely close or the regional train requires it. Check both legs, since a search can offer different Marseille stops for the outward and return journeys.

## Use Vitrolles only as part of an airport connection

Vitrolles Aéroport Marseille Provence is near the airport, not inside a terminal. LeBus+ line 13 links the regional station with the airport bus station. Line 13 takes about five minutes, and a single ticket costs €1.20.

Vitrolles can make sense when you are already travelling by TER from a corridor such as Avignon, Arles or Nîmes. Skip it if the regional train leaves a long wait for the bus or too little margin before check-in. Confirm the train, line 13 timetable and flight terminal before choosing it.

## Saint-Charles connects Marseille with France and beyond

The quickest direct trains from Paris reach Marseille in just over three hours. TGV INOUI and OUIGO also link Saint-Charles with Lyon. Regional trains provide useful connections with Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, Arles, Toulon, Nice and places along the Mediterranean coast.

Renfe runs direct AVE trains from Marseille to Barcelona and Madrid. TGV Lyria serves Geneva and Lausanne seasonally from spring to autumn, but its operating days change across the season. Search the exact date before relying on either international service.

Eurostar requires a change in Brussels, Lille or Paris. Eurostar Sun is not running to Marseille in the current timetable, so there is no direct Eurostar from Amsterdam or Belgium.

International timetables change. Confirm the operating date, departure station, directness and arrival time before building a flight, cruise or separate-ticket connection around one of these trains.

## Allow time to move through the terminus

Saint-Charles is a terminus, with dead-end platforms facing the main concourse. When changing trains, walk to the front end of the platform, cross the concourse and find the next departure on the live display. A short transfer shown in a planner may not include that full walk.

Leave a sensible buffer when separate tickets are involved or the next train requires a reservation. Use the live screen instead of walking towards a remembered platform letter.

## Walk or take metro line 1 to Vieux-Port

The grand staircase is the most direct route from the station towards central Marseille. Walk down it when you are travelling light, then continue towards La Canebière and Vieux-Port. The route is downhill from the station. Coming back with a suitcase is much harder.

With heavy luggage, limited mobility or a tight schedule, use metro line 1 towards La Fourragère for Vieux-Port. Check lift and escalator status if step-free access matters. On the return, allow time to get from the metro back to the train concourse.

## Take the A1 coach for a simple airport transfer

From central Marseille, the direct A1 airport coach is normally the simplest choice. It leaves from the coach station in the Saint-Charles complex and runs to Marseille Provence Airport without the separate bus needed at Vitrolles. The journey takes about 25 minutes in normal traffic, with departures every 10 minutes.

Traffic can stretch the journey. Check the live timetable and current fare, then leave a flight-safe margin instead of treating 25 minutes as a guarantee. Choose the Vitrolles train and line 13 combination only when its regional timetable is clearly better for your starting point.

## Separate ferry access from the cruise-port journey

For the ferry area around La Joliette and Gare Maritime, take metro line 2 from Saint-Charles towards Gèze and get off at Joliette. From there, follow the terminal printed on the ferry ticket. Corsica and North Africa sailings do not all use one interchangeable check-in point.

Cruise ships use a different part of the port. From Joliette, bus 35T runs on cruise days towards the cruise-port entrance at Gate 4, but it does not deliver every traveller to the ship. Leave time for the remaining transfer through the port and follow the cruise company's berth instructions. Do not book a tight train-to-ship connection on the assumption that a shuttle will cover the last stretch.

## Confirm station services before relying on them

The intercity coach station is part of the Saint-Charles transport complex, beside the railway station on rue Honnorat. A booking that says Marseille coach station or Marseille bus station will often mean this complex. Read the stop details before travelling.

La Bag Mobile provides left luggage on Boulevard Bourdet at level 0 of the station. Check its opening hours and current charge before planning a day around stored bags. Disabled travellers and people with reduced mobility can request SNCF's Assist'enGare service for the exact journey. Arrange it ahead of travel, confirm the meeting point and include both trains when assistance is needed during a change.

## Match the rail pass to the operator

A rail pass does not remove the need to identify the train company and reserve the right service. TGV INOUI, TGV Lyria and Renfe AVE require compulsory reservations in addition to a valid pass.

Interrail users can use OUIGO with a compulsory reservation. Eurail users should not assume OUIGO is covered and must check the exact train in their pass planner before relying on the pass. Regional TER services around Marseille normally do not need a reservation, but check the selected train rather than applying one rule to every result.

## Confirm the station and onward plan before paying

Saint-Charles is the default, but the ticket still decides. Confirm the full station name, the operator and any compulsory reservation before purchase. If the journey uses Blancarde or Vitrolles, check the local connection that follows the train.

For a flight or ship, work backwards from the required check-in time. Add the airport bus, port transfer and a delay margin before choosing the rail arrival. A slightly earlier train is safer than a connection that works only when every leg runs perfectly.
