Ostrava sits at the eastern end of the main [Prague to Ostrava](<https://everyrail.com/trains/prague-to-ostrava/>) corridor, the busiest long distance line in the country.

## Getting to Ostrava by train

Ostrava sits at the eastern end of the main Prague to Ostrava corridor, the busiest long-distance line in the country. Direct trains from Prague run roughly hourly through most of the day, with journey times around 3 hours on the fastest services and closer to 3 hours 20 minutes on slower ones. Treat those figures as orientation rather than a promise for every departure, since the exact time depends on the train category and stopping pattern. Check your specific train when you book.

Three operators compete on this line: [České dráhy](<https://everyrail.com/czechia/ceske-drahy/>), [RegioJet](<https://everyrail.com/czechia/regiojet/>), and [Leo Express](<https://everyrail.com/czechia/leo-express/>). That competition keeps fares reasonable and choice wide, but it also means the ticket you hold only works on the operator that sold it, so do not assume a České dráhy ticket lets you board a RegioJet service.

Since December 2025, seat reservations are compulsory on every commercial train on the Prague to Ostrava line, not just on the SC Pendolino services that used to require one. That covers České dráhy's EC and IC trains as well as the Pendolino. Book through the e-shop or the Můj vlak app and the reservation itself is free, folded into the ticket price. Buy it later at a counter or onboard and you pay a separate reservation fee, currently CZK 35 across routes and classes. RegioJet works the same way in practice: a seat reservation is built into every regular fare, and only its Flexi ticket type excludes the free reservation, so anyone travelling without a booked seat needs to sort one before boarding.

## Ostrava hlavní nádraží and getting into the centre

Ostrava's main station, Ostrava hlavní nádraží, is the one to book for the city centre. It sits roughly 2 km from the historic core, too far for most travellers to walk with luggage, so plan on the tram. Lines 1, 2 and 8 run from the station forecourt into town, and line 8 reaches the Stodolní street nightlife district in around 7 minutes. Buy a ticket from the machine on the platform before boarding, since Ostrava trams are proof-of-payment and inspectors do check.

Ostrava also has a second station, Ostrava-Svinov, on the western edge of the city near the airport road. It matters mainly for travellers changing onto regional services or heading out towards the airport, not for a first-time visitor aiming for the centre. If a booking site only shows "Ostrava" without a station name, open the train details and confirm it says hlavní nádraží before you pay.

## Ostrava to Olomouc, and the wider regional pattern

Ostrava and Olomouc sit on the same corridor as Prague, about 79 km apart, and the regional and long-distance trains between them are frequent, several an hour at peak times, with a typical journey of around 55 minutes to just under an hour. This makes Olomouc an easy half-day trip or a stopover if you are travelling on from Prague and want to break the journey.

Because Ostrava, Olomouc and Prague all sit on one line, a ticket bought for the full Prague to Ostrava run does not automatically let you stop over in Olomouc. If you want to break your journey, check the fare conditions with the operator first, since some ticket types are locked to a specific train.

## Booking sense for this route

With three operators on one corridor, price is rarely the deciding factor between them, since fares move with demand and how far ahead you book. What differs more is departure spacing and onboard comfort tier. RegioJet and Leo Express both run their own catering and seat classes, distinct from České dráhy's InterCity and Pendolino tiers, so compare the actual train category shown at booking rather than assuming they are interchangeable.

Book early if you want a specific seat configuration or a business-class type fare on a popular midweek departure, as those categories fill before standard seating does. For a routine daytime trip, later booking usually still finds space, just possibly on a less convenient departure time.

## Frequently asked questions

### Should I use České dráhy (ČD) to check an Ostrava ticket?

Use the official operator timetable and conditions for the exact train you want. Check every leg and the ticket flexibility before paying.

### Should I choose the shortest connection to Ostrava?

Choose it only when the connection is protected and practical. A little more margin is usually better when an earlier train, coach or flight could be late.

### Can a rail pass replace an Ostrava ticket?

A pass can cover eligible journeys, but check the selected train and any reservation condition before travel day.

### Should I buy separate tickets to Ostrava?

They can work when you allow a generous connection margin. Read the later ticket conditions first because they may not cover an earlier delay.

### What should I check after arriving in Ostrava?

Check the route to your accommodation before travel, including the arrival time and luggage needs. Decide whether walking, local transport or a taxi is realistic from the station.
