## Getting to Olomouc by train

Olomouc sits on the same main corridor that connects Prague to Ostrava, roughly two thirds of the way along it, which makes the city one of the easiest stopovers in Moravia. Direct trains from Prague run frequently through the day, with journey times typically around 2 hours 20 minutes on the faster services. Treat that as orientation, not a fixed promise, since the exact time depends on the train category and how many intermediate stops it makes. Check the journey time for your specific departure when you book.

The route is served by both major domestic operators, [České dráhy](<https://everyrail.com/czechia/ceske-drahy/>) and [RegioJet](<https://everyrail.com/czechia/regiojet/>), plus [Leo Express](<https://everyrail.com/czechia/leo-express/>) on some services, and it also carries international EC trains continuing on to Poland and Slovakia. That mix means Olomouc functions as a genuine junction, not just a stop on the way to somewhere else. If you are travelling from Vienna, Warsaw or Bratislava, there is a reasonable chance your train already passes through Olomouc without needing a change.

Reservation rules follow the same pattern as elsewhere on this corridor. České dráhy requires a seat reservation on its faster EC, IC and SC Pendolino services, and buying it through the e-shop or the Můj vlak app folds the reservation into the ticket price at no extra cost. RegioJet includes a free seat reservation with its standard fares, with the exception of its cheaper Flexi ticket, which does not carry one. On a well-used corridor like this, do not assume a seat is guaranteed just because you hold a ticket; check whether your fare type includes the reservation before you travel.

## Olomouc hlavní nádraží and arriving in the centre

Olomouc hlavní nádraží is the city's main station and the one almost every visitor should book. Trams stop directly outside the station building, so there is no separate walk to a transit hub. Lines 2, 4 and 6 run through the historic centre towards Náměstí Hrdinů, with the ride into town taking around 5 to 8 minutes depending on the stop.

Walking is a realistic option too. The old town is about 15 minutes on foot from the station, mostly flat, and it is a reasonable way to arrive if you are travelling light and want a first look at the city before checking in anywhere. With luggage, especially after a long journey from Prague or further afield, the tram is the more comfortable choice, and a single ticket bought from the platform machine covers the short ride.

Olomouc does not have the multi-station problem that trips up travellers in Venice or Paris. There is essentially one station that matters for intercity arrivals, which removes one common source of confusion when booking.

## Olomouc to Ostrava, and the shared corridor

Olomouc and Ostrava sit close together on the same line, about 79 km apart, with frequent regional and long-distance trains covering the gap in roughly 55 minutes on the faster services. That makes a same-day trip between the two cities straightforward, and several operators run the route rather than one, so departures are common through the day rather than clustered at a few fixed times.

Because Prague, Olomouc and Ostrava all sit on one corridor, travellers heading further east often treat Olomouc as a natural stopping point rather than a detour. A ticket bought for a longer through-journey does not automatically allow a stopover here, though, so check the fare rules before assuming you can break your trip partway.

## Booking sense for this route

With competing operators serving the same line, comparing on price alone misses part of the picture. RegioJet and Leo Express run their own onboard service and seating tiers, separate from České dráhy's InterCity and Pendolino classes, so look at the actual train category on offer rather than assuming interchangeability between operators.

Book ahead if you want a specific seat type or want to avoid a busy departure around weekends or public holidays, when demand on this corridor climbs. For an ordinary weekday trip, later booking usually still finds a seat, even if not on the most convenient train.
