Use Salzburg Hbf for almost every rail trip; choose a smaller stop only when your hotel, the airport area or a specific venue makes it useful.

## Salzburg Hbf is the default station

Book Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, usually shown as Salzburg Hbf, for long-distance arrivals, departures and changes. ÖBB, [Westbahn](<https://everyrail.com/austria/westbahn/>), Deutsche Bahn, Bayerische Regiobahn and the Salzburger Lokalbahn all use this hub. If a journey result shows another Salzburg name, it may be a local stop. Check the full station name before paying.

The station has lifts and escalators, ticket machines, and staffed ÖBB and Westbahn sales points. With luggage, take the lift rather than struggling along the platform route. Read the live departure board before going up, and match the train number as well as the destination. Platforms can change.

## Smaller Salzburg stops only suit specific addresses

Pick Salzburg Taxham Europark when the Europark shopping centre or Red Bull Arena is your real destination. For Red Bull Arena, use the S3 stop at Taxham Europark. It is not at the airport terminal, so a shorter-looking line on the map is not a good reason to choose it.

Salzburg Mülln-Altstadt, Salzburg Aiglhof and Salzburg Süd can shorten the last leg for some addresses. Mülln-Altstadt is particularly easy to misread: the name alone does not tell you whether it is closer to your old-town hotel than Hbf. Map the final walk or local connection before selecting any of these stops.

For an ordinary central stay, stick with Salzburg Hbf. Check the current journey planner for the exact stop and service on your travel date because engineering work can alter local routes.

## Salzburg Lokalbahnhof is part of the Hbf complex

Salzburg Lokalbahnhof is the basement station at Südtiroler Platz, inside the main-station complex. It is not a separate transfer across Salzburg. The Salzburger Lokalbahn normally uses it for S1 and S11 services, so follow the signs downstairs and allow extra time with luggage.

One temporary exception matters. From 13 June to 13 September 2026, the line between Salzburg Hbf and Bürmoos is closed, with replacement buses on the affected section. During the closure, follow the replacement-bus instructions instead of assuming the usual underground rail connection is running.

## The old-town transfer depends on luggage and address

Allow about 20 minutes on foot from Hbf to the centre. A roughly 20-minute walk can work well with a light bag and a nearby address. The far side of the old town takes longer, as does the uphill approach to Fortress Hohensalzburg, so map the hotel entrance rather than planning around the headline time.

With luggage, poor weather or little time, take a trolleybus. Lines 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 link Hbf with the old town in about 10 minutes. Check the live stop display and the final walk before boarding.

A taxi is the sensible fallback late at night, with children or with heavy bags. Use the signed rank at Hbf and confirm the likely fare before leaving.

## Salzburg Airport connects to Hbf by bus

Bus 2 is the clearest public-transport link between Salzburg Airport and Salzburg Hbf. The journey takes about 23 minutes, with buses every 15 or 20 minutes each day and a 20-minute interval on Sundays and public holidays. Leave a margin when a flight or fixed train depends on it because traffic and disruption can still affect the trip.

Taxham Europark is not a useful shortcut unless the stop genuinely helps your final address. For a long-distance connection, take bus 2 to Hbf, where the main choices are concentrated. Check the airport's current timetable before travel.

There are taxi ranks at both the airport terminal and Hbf. The transfer takes about 15 to 20 minutes by taxi, but ask for the live journey estimate and fare if a tight connection makes one necessary.

## Long-distance choices depend on the operator and corridor

Look at the actual train, not only the city pair. On Westbahn's direct trains, allow about 2 hours 30 minutes from Vienna, 1 hour 12 minutes from Linz, 1 hour 55 minutes from Innsbruck and 1 hour 32 minutes from [Munich to Salzburg](<https://everyrail.com/trains/munich-to-salzburg/>). These figures are useful for orientation, but they do not describe every departure.

ÖBB Railjet services cover Austrian and international corridors. Westbahn also runs direct trains through Salzburg towards Vienna, Linz, Innsbruck and Munich. Deutsche Bahn and Bayerische Regiobahn services appear at Salzburg Hbf too, with BRB's RE5 linking Munich and Salzburg. Before booking, check the operator, departure station, changes and total time for your date.

Westbahn's 2026 timetable changes can lengthen journeys from Salzburg towards Munich, Tyrol and Vorarlberg. Check your exact train for the travel date, and leave more margin when a fixed onward connection matters.

## Ticket and pass rules follow the train operator

Buy from the operating company when changes, refunds or disruption support matter. An ÖBB or Deutsche Bahn ticket is not valid on a Westbahn train. A similar departure time does not make the tickets interchangeable, so check the operator shown on the service before paying.

On an ÖBB Railjet connection, an optional seat reservation starts at €3. Nightjet is different: its tickets include the chosen seat, couchette or sleeper reservation, while Interrail or Eurail pass holders still need a reservation in their chosen Nightjet category. Book early if getting a bed matters.

Westbahn includes a free Standard Class seat reservation with online tickets booked at least three hours before departure, subject to availability. Interrail or Eurail passes valid in Austria and Germany are accepted in Westbahn Standard Class. Check the class and train before boarding because operator rules do not transfer from one service to another.

For local travel, a full-fare 24-hour core-zone ticket costs €5.20 from a machine, app or online, or €6.40 from a bus driver. It gives unlimited public transport in the Salzburg core zone for 24 hours from first use. Compare that with the rides you need, and make sure any paper ticket is valid before boarding.

## Station facilities are most useful before the platform

Do the practical jobs in the Hbf concourse before heading to the train. Salzburg Hbf has multifunctional lockers, free station WiFi under the name OEBB-station, food outlets, ticket machines and staffed sales points. Leave time to store bags or buy food before a short connection.

Salzburg Hbf also has an ÖBB Lounge, but access depends on the ticket or eligible pass. Not every first-class or sleeper product qualifies. Check the current rules and opening hours before planning to wait there.

After stopping for food or lockers, read the live board again. A platform change can quickly use up the time left in a tight connection.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do overnight guests receive free public transport in Salzburg?

Yes. Overnight guests in Salzburg province receive a free Guest Mobility Ticket from their accommodation at check-in or pre-check-in. It covers public transport across the province. The final valid day runs to 23:59, and an ongoing journey may continue to its scheduled destination.

### How early should I request mobility assistance at Salzburg Hbf?

Request ÖBB assistance at least 12 hours before a domestic departure, or by 18:00 the previous day if it leaves before 09:00. International journeys need 24 hours. A three-hour deadline applies only between Salzburg Hbf and another station on ÖBB’s named-hub list.

### Are the waiting room and toilets at Salzburg Hbf open overnight?

ÖBB lists the waiting room, toilets and accessible toilet at Salzburg Hbf as open 24 hours a day. Shop, ticket-office and lounge hours are shorter, so do not rely on those services during an overnight wait without checking first.

### Do children travel free on Salzburg public transport?

Children up to age 5 travel free when accompanied by a paying passenger. Children aged 6 to 14 pay Salzburg Verkehr’s minimum fare. Bring a document showing the child’s date of birth, as staff may ask for proof of eligibility.

### Can I take a bicycle on Salzburg city buses?

Bicycles are allowed free on Salzburg's low-floor city buses from 09:00 on weekdays and all day at weekends and on public holidays. Space is not guaranteed, passengers and pushchairs have priority, and staff can refuse a bicycle when the vehicle is busy.
